Will Wood's HEAD (Asbury Park, NJ)

From now until May 30th, the unmatchable Will Wood — artist, musician, performer, and more — will be unveiling an ambitious multimedia experience in Asbury Park, NJ, featuring never-before-seen works of art, a new concert film, and new music. Entitled “HEAD,” this impressive exhibit is sure to be something you won’t soon forget! Find our more from Will Wood himself in our interview below.

Tell us about Will Wood’s HEAD. What is it, when is it, where is it? What can people expect to see, hear, and feel?

WILL WOOD: This May, I’m going to be taking over a historical building in downtown Asbury Park (529 Bangs Avenue) and turning by brain inside out in it. HEAD is a multimedia experimental art exhibit featuring music, film, intimate performances, and the first ever exhibit of my psychedelic visual art. It’ll be running from May 13th till May 30th, it’ll be completely unlike anything else I’ve ever done, and it’ll be a landmark/milestone event for me as an artist.

Why Asbury Park?

Asbury Park is one of the cultural capitals of New Jersey, and a second hometown of mine. I spent a lot of my youth in Neptune, did a lot of my earliest art projects down by the boardwalk, and played a number of my early and most formative shows in Asbury Park.

Many people know you for your musical talent. What inspired you to finally showcase your visual art, and what is the inspiration behind your work?

In October of 2011, I took LSD. At the end of that night, toward the tail end of one of the most powerful experiences of my life, I sat at a bench on a college campus in upstate New York covered in ink, with a handful of markers, and began drawing. I haven’t stopped. I had always hoped that my music career would get me to a place where I could find an audience for the other types of work I do, and I’m finally at a place where I have a platform for my art. Art inspired by altered states, surreal experiences, and visions I’ve had without the use of any substances.

Tell us about your concert film, The Real Will Wood. Where was it shot, what was the production process like? Do you have any other films in the works?

The Real Will Wood is the result of two years of confusion. Shot at some of the most iconic and bizarre places in New Jersey, and featuring never-before-heard or seen performances, TRWW is a feature-length concert film with a very unusual bent.

Will Wood’s HEAD is an ambitious and impressive undertaking! What words of advice or encouragement would you give to other artists or entrepreneurs out there who would like to attempt something similar?

Thank you. HEAD is the inevitable culmination of the last two years of my career, I hope it’s as impressive as it sounds. If you’re hoping to do something similar, wait until I’m done first so I don’t have to compete with you.

What advice or encouragement would you give to kids out there who are maybe afraid to share their creativity with the world?

Make something. Anything. Don’t worry about whether or not it’s any good – because odds are you don’t know what’s good. Your audience does. And if they say it’s not good, ignore them and keep making things. Really good art happens by accident, when the results of your unfiltered creating meets the audience’s unknown desires. When you stumble across the thing that people didn’t know they wanted. I have no idea if it’s ever come out of me. We’re going to find out. If I can do that, you definitely can.

What’s next on the horizon for you?

I’ll be talking about it more at HEAD.

Interview with Joe Mifsud (Singer, Songwriter, Musician)

In 2013, Bergen County singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Joe Mifsud released his sophomore album, Stay Calm And Carry On. Drawing from a variety of influences, his music has a decidedly alternative/rock/pop bent with new folk/lo-fi elements via his side project, Here for Now. (On top of that, Joe is also a standup comedian. Check out his Facebook page for upcoming performance dates.)

Now in 2019, Joe is ready to jump back into the scene, writing new songs, playing shows, and meeting/collaborating with like-minded creatives and music lovers. Before you listen to his new work, be sure to check out some of his past gems, as well as our interview below to find out more about his personal journey and hopes for the future.

What’s your name, where are you from originally, and where are you based now? 

My name is Joe Mifsud. I was born in New York, New York but grew up in Harrington Park, NJ in Bergen County. I currently reside in Harrington Park.

Tell us about your musical background. You do a bit of everything -- singing, songwriting, and playing multiple instruments. How would you describe your genre/style?  Who are your influences?  

I've generally described my music as a cross pollination of several influences, but if I HAD to describe it to people I usually say my sound would be if The Beatles met The Foo Fighters. Or just very Foo Fighters-like in nature.

Musically, I play guitar, bass, drums, sing, write my own lyrics and music. I do enjoy a lot of different types of music. Growing up, my dad really enjoyed Motown music, Doo-Wop music and the Jazz and Soul Singers. My mom listened to all different types of Spanish Music and top radio hits of the 80's. My sister listened to a lot of jam bands like Phish & Dave Matthews Band along with early 90's Alternative Rock. My brother was listening to 80's Metal and Progressive Rock like Rush when we shared the room together when we were kids.

My childhood best friend Kevin and I listened to a lot of 90's Alternative Rock as we grew up as well as a lot of Classic Rock. We would raid his parents' Classic Rock collection. My influences are many to name but a short list would include The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Who, Black Sabbath, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Foo Fighters. More importantly to me were the local influences, musical peers and my brother (who used to play guitar and bass in a band) and my dad (who used to sing in a barbershop group with his friends on the street corner).

What's the inspiration behind your music? How has it progressed over time? How do you hope people will feel when they listen to it? 

The main inspiration behind my music is relationships.
Not always a romantic love relationship,
but it comes from a very literary sense.
Man and nature.
Man and woman.
Man and himself.
Man and society.

I appreciate the very therapeutic value of songwriting. I tend to write very autobiographically as a way of coping and understanding myself and the world around me. I have been fortunate to use music and songwriting as a way to develop my personal and artistic voice. I hope that people find a connection and comfort in what I bring to music. Music to celebrate the good times and good memories and bring people together. Music to find solace and comfort in during the hard times. I hope that people are able to connect with the music on some level that strikes them even if it is just the tone or sonic soundscape or the lyrics and message or all of it. 

Ultimately, I would like to give back to music what it gave to me. Music gave me a sense of home, comfort and purpose.

What has your personal journey been like?  When did you discover that you loved music?

My personal journey started when I was young. My earliest memories of music were listening to Spanish music in the living room and tapping out the rhythm on the conga drum with my dad. The first song that really struck a chord with me was The Beatles' “Lady Madonna” because of the ragtime-type groove and the cartoon-like vocal section that reminded me of a Looney Tunes song. I loved when there would be classical music in cartoons when the characters would have a play off of classical songs on piano. Queen's “Bohemian Rhapsody” is my favorite rock song of all time. Nothing quite captured my imagination in so many ways about the possibilities of Rock than “Bohemian Rhapsody”! As I got to be about ten or eleven years old, the first band that I was able to claim as my own was Nirvana. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and its accompanying music video blew me away! When I saw Dave Grohl playing the drums, I knew that I wanted to do that! Play Drums! Play Music for a living ! I felt empowered by Nirvana and their music because, similarly to The Beatles' effect, they were just normal people making great music. I felt like I could do it, too, and that it wasn't totally beyond me.

 I discovered that I loved music very early on in my life and that it became a goal and a challenge that I accepted to be like my heroes. I wanted to learn to sing, write lyrics, play instruments and write my own original songs with a level of proficiency.

What are your goals as an artist? What would you like to accomplish by the end of this year? What kinds of people would you like to meet?  Are there any artists, bands, or producers who you'd love to collaborate with one day? Do you have any shows coming up? 

My goals as an artist are to have the music reach people and touch their lives in a positive way. By the end of the year, I would like to have accomplished jumpstarting a life in music and sharing music that I've written with as many people as possible and through multiple channels such as live shows, interviews, social media, streaming services, reviews and podcasts, personal connections, etc. I would like to reach people that genuinely love, support and appreciate music and the arts. I am open to meeting people that are creative, passionate and awesome! There are many artists, bands or producers that I'd love to collaborate with one day. At the top of my lists would be Rick Rubin for producer and Dave Grohl for Musician.

I do not have any shows coming up, but I am looking to plan shows for 2019 and beyond and will keep you updated!

What words of advice or encouragement would you give to someone who wants to follow a similar passion, or is maybe facing obstacles similar to what you've faced?

Words of advice or encouragement that I would give to someone who wants to follow a similar passion or is maybe facing obstacles similar to what I've faced: Believe in yourself. Trust your voice. Trust the process and trust that an audience will be attracted to your vision. Always stay true to yourself and the original vision because when it's all said and done you have yourself to be accountable to.

DO! Don't let anxiety or insecurity or excuses counteract productivity. Your older self will thank your younger self. 

Create, Create, Create! Hopefully you get a job where you have the time and income to fund and realize your art without interference.

It may take time but stick with it!

Interview with Connor Bradley (Artist)

Bootleg items — whether it be clothes, jewelry, or accessories — often have an alluring aura to them. Take for example, a bootleg Grateful Dead t-shirt: it may not be “official”, but it has an individual personality that cannot be found in mass-produced, licensed merchandise. Therein lies the paradox of the “bootleg” — it is supposedly “inauthentic,” but in reality, it holds a unique quality given to it by the artist behind the graphic.

With that being said, some people are more fascinated with brand-authenticity and bootleg culture than others. Connor Bradley, a NJ-raised, Philadelphia-based artist and designer is one of these people. His latest brainchild is Cold Beer & Soda, a brand that promises “Fresh Quality Guaranteed.” Using his past experience with t-shirt designing/printing, Connor is putting out product that takes influence from hand-painted signage — an artform that is authentic as it gets.

So grab a lawn chair and kick back with your favorite chilled beverage and familiarize yourself with Connor Bradley and his latest project, Cold Beer & Soda. Fresh quality, indeed.

Where did you grow up and where do you currently live? Do you feel as if your environment has had an influence on the style of your artwork?

I grew up in Howell, NJ which is located in Monmouth County but currently live in Philadelphia, where I go to school. I feel like my change of environment has definitely influenced the things that I am currently doing and working on. When I was younger, growing up in a town that has farms and is very rural I was always influenced by the city lifestyle I saw in rap videos, skate videos, and on streetwear blogs. I followed a lot of blogs on Tumblr and Instagram pages that were taking photos of things that were happening in the city centered around streetwear, and I thought that was the coolest stuff in the entire world, and I wanted to be there and have that, but I couldn’t where I was located.

So the first chance I got to go to a city I jumped on and that’s here in Philadelphia. So now being in the city, and having the chance to meet other creatives who like the same stuff as me, and going to events like the ones I was seeing on the internet as a kid is really cool and inspiring to me at the moment. It’s great to actually be able to have fun like what I was seeing as a young kid. Being able to bounce ideas off of people and just talking about clothes, music, culture and having inspiring conversations with people is a great change of pace for me.

Your latest creative output, Cold Beer and Soda represents the East coast aesthetic so well. What is the overall theme or concept of the brand? What are your inspirations for the images you chose to use on the first run of CB&S tees?

Well that goes back to the blogs I spoke about earlier. Store fronts and hand signage are always something that I’ve loved to look at. So it comes from that a lot. I love looking at signs because they are all unique and they are really the first impression you get of a business when walking in the city. We didn’t have that by me growing up, we just had commercial stores that are so in your face with branding and that sort of stuff. It really gives me the opportunity to be creative when making and designing the graphics. It allows me to be funny with a slogan for a business, use some funny clip art that looks cheesy but at the same time fits the pieces. But mainly the aesthetic is funny souvenir t-shirts, or employee t-shirts for businesses. In the first collection I did a “Bootleg Emporium” tee that in a way is a homage to the bootlegs I have been making for the last 4-5 years. And of course the Moon Motel is a super legendary sign in my hometown that was out in front of a super run down motel that was really out of place for our area. And that kind of has its own aura to that.

I’ve been following your Instagram for a few years now and I can see that the Grateful Dead and Phish have had a massive influence on your lifestyle. When you first started making t-shirts, many of them were Dead bootlegs? What made you want to transition from Dead boots to starting your own brand? What did you learn from your early days of making and selling shirts?

I love Dead Bootlegs and they will forever hold a place in my heart but they don’t have longevity. It’s something that I like to do for fun and a hobby that allows me to buy ticket to see them. Cold Beer & Soda allows me to be more serious about my creative set and work on things that are out of the norm from what people usually see from me. It’s starting completely over from scratch again and that’s the fun for me. It really challenges me everyday when I sit down and think about it because I forget how slow of a process it is to build something from nothing. I’m very grateful that I started doing this early on in life and I have the experience that I do and can kind of navigate myself around some of the beginning stumbling blocks. So if I’ve learned anything, it’s definitely to be patient, and relax.

Are there any clothing brands or visual artists that you feel like we should know about?

Rather than a specific brand/person, I’d like to talk about the creative energy in Philadelphia right now. There are so many special things happening here right now, and I’m so excited to be able to toss my hat in the ring among this group of people who inspire me and push me out of my comfort zone. Everybody builds each other up, no competition and wanting to get over on someone. At first I was nervous being the outsider but everyone here has been so welcoming and encouraging. I wouldn’t have made the steps to start something new without these people.

We are all looking out for one another and supporting each other.

Any cool stories or experiences from going to concerts for so many years that stand out?

There are many. But out of everything, it’s building up my family that I go to shows with. When I first started going to shows, I was going with a lot of older heads and they took me in and showed me the ropes of everything. I eventually started forming my steady group of friends and that’s the best thing that has ever happened to my life. We talk every second of everyday, I love them a lot. You get to meet so many amazing people from different backgrounds through this community and it humbles you and makes you grow everyday.

South Orange Downtown After Sundown Announces 2019 Live Music Concert Lineup

To curate a fabulous season of music, Gregory Burrus holds an Open Call in March every year using the Downtown After Sundown page on Facebook. Gregory then roams the internet and social media to gauge the popularity of these potential bands in SOMA and the surrounding towns. He then negotiates with these top notched, very talented musicians to come on out and entertain us.

May 24th. Opening Weekend - Bassist Destiny Diggs-Pinto Trio 

A recent West Orange High School graduate is one of the 2019 YoungArts Competition winners, selected from a field of over 7,000 high school musicians nationally. Destiny Diggs-Pinto has performed at the Montclair Jazz Festival for 5 years, the 2018 New Jersey Central Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, NJPAC and the 50 anniversary of the New Jersey Jazz Societies Pee Wee Russell Memorial Stomp. Destiny has also played professionally with artists like Christian McBride and John DeJohnette, amongst others. Destiny has attended the Jazz House Kids program for 5 years under the direction of Christian McBride and Melissa Walker. 

June 21st. Lynette Sheard Live with DC Fusion

Lynette Sheard is a gifted and versatile vocalist, actor, producer and director. She is the unseated "West Orange Idol." Her performances have been acknowledged in numerous publications, including NY Times, The Record, The Chronicle and most recently, The Star Ledger, which proclaimed that, "Her voice reaches deep into one's soul and finds a soft spot." She performs Jazz, R&B, Gospel, Soul and Pop music in NY, NJ, PA and Las Vegas. Theatre credits include principal roles in: Smokey Joe's Cafe, Ragtime, Swing, Aida, Outcasts, and Downtown After Sundown Live Concert Series at Jazz On Sloan South Orange Gazebo. June 28th Leonieke Scheuble Trio

17-year-old Leonieke Scheuble at age 5 or 6 started playing piano after being inspired by the movie Ray.  Named 2016 “Best Up and Coming Young Artist” by Hothouse NYC and featured in a PBS-filmed TEDx TALK, in 2017 she won the New Jersey Governor’s Award for “Exceptional Promise in Music” and also performed for the New Jersey Jazz Society’s 45th Anniversary Gala. She was also awarded the “Youth in Action Award” from the International Women in Jazz for the 2nd time.

July 26th. NJPAC Weekend - NJPAC Inspired Dance Night

Rev Eyesha K. Marable. A former professional dancer with Footprints Dance Company, Forces of Nature Dance Theatre and Showtime at the Apollo, she has shared the stage with LL Cool J, R. Kelly and gospel artists like Donald Malloy. To see her perform with other liturgical dancers or conduct a dance workshop is in a word, uplifting. She founded the National Liturgical Dance Network, which trains and supports dance ministers, and she is celebrating 29 years of spreading the ministry of dance here and abroad.

July 27th NJPAC Weekend - NJPAC Jazz Jam

Led by a semi-finalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano competition is the accomplished pianist and bandleader James Austin Jr.. Currently leading a sold-out jam performance in Newark Clements Place, James has performed alongside an illustrious list of singers and musicians in diverse settings throughout the world, including numerous celebrity functions and televised shows.  He recently served as pianist and arranger for two star-studded concerts at Carnegie Hall under the baton of esteemed musical director, Ray Chew. James will lead his band into South Orange, NJ and all vocalists and musicians are welcome to join the inaugural NJPAC DAS Jazz Jam.

Aug 17th. Ricky Persaud, Jr.

Returning favorite and the group that always draws our largest audience, Ricky Persaud Jr. is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer and arranger whose music style is Pop infused with Reggae, Rock R&B and Latin. Ricky is Berklee College of Music Class 2021 and is a voting member at The Recording Academy / GRAMMY.  He studied voice, guitar, piano and band at Mark Murphy Music in South Orange, NJ. He also studied drums, bass, guitar, piano and music production at the Newark School of The Arts in Newark, NJ. Ricky is an alumni of the New Jersey Performing Art (NJPAC)/Wells Fargo Jazz For Teens Ensemble and NJPAC's George Wein Scholars Ensemble. Ricky was the recipient of the 2016 Governor's Award for Excellence in Music.

Aug 17th. Darryl Clark Fusion and Friends

Join us for this year’s returning performance of the very smooth Darryl Clark Fusion Band. Darryl was inspired by professional basis Kim Clarke resulting in Darryl attending Jazzmobile in Harlem, and he eventually ended up studying under the legendary bassist Earl May of the Cab Calloway, Frank Foster, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis era bands. Darryl has spent a musical lifetime living,  learning and becoming accomplished in a spectrum of styles; traditional jazz, fusion, funk, gospel, rock and alternative make up an inclusive repertoire playing with jazz artists including Nat Adderley Jr., Tina Fabrique, Peter Lin, Marshall McDonald and Slide Hampton. Because of this, Darry’s Downtown After Sundown performances usually consists of jazz veterans from all over the Greater New York and New Jersey area, and last season’s Nat Adderley appearance made for a very special night. Schedules permitting, 2019’s performance with Nat Adderley and others promises to be another very special night.  Also of special note is that this year Darryl will profile a few tunes from his recently released CD’s Sleeve 340 and West Coast Dreamin that was produced to benefit the children's charity LoveHallie.org.

Gregory Burrus curates the South Orange Village Center Alliance’s Downtown After Sundown Live Music Concerts. This SOMA resident arrived in South Orange 23 years ago and just loves South Orange, NJ. Gregory enjoys all music genres, but his first love jazz began as a boy when his father played jazz on the good old record player at home and took him to clubs all over Manhattan. Greg was an executive in the telecommunications industry and has consulted on telecom, technology and operational business processes systems all over the world. Now he is putting his expertise, gain from his former business environment to work producing music, art and community events across South Orange, Maplewood, Newark and other towns around Northern New Jersey and New York.

Large, diverse casts. Epic stories. Intimate and unique settings. Thursday, March 28th will mark the first performance of Hamlet by the newly formed Shakespeare@ theatre company. Shakespeare@’s performances will be like no other Shakespearean performances you’ve seen. Why? Because they’re tailored specifically to Jersey City, its vibe, and its people. Where are you from originally, where are you based now?  

SEAN HAGERTY: I grew up in West Virginia. Now I’m based here in Jersey City.

Tell us about Shakespeare@. What is it, when did it start, what’s your role?

We tell epic stories in intimate and unique spaces. We’re committed to diverse, large casts, with a focus on international and cross-cultural exchange. The idea is that the ‘@’ places us. So for Hamlet we’re Shakespeare@ Grace Church. We want to showcase the venue as well as the production.

The idea had been knocking around for a while. Then a couple of years ago, a few things fell into place and it seemed right to give it a go.

My role is the Artistic Director. I run the company and direct the current production.

Tell us a little bit about your personal background and journey. What inspired you to start Shakespeare@? Why Shakespeare? What is it about Shakespeare’s works that still resonates with people of all ages today?

Funnily enough I was never a big fan of Shakespeare growing up. I had the typical middle school exposure to Shakespeare where you’re sat down, given a copy of Romeo & Juliet, and told to read it. Which is kind of like asking a child to appreciate Beethoven by handing them the sheet music. So for years I had no desire to perform or even see Shakespeare. But as a young actor, I was on tour with a show over in the UK and while we were in London, one of my cast-mates had an extra ticket to see a production of The Tempest and asked me if I wanted to go. I had no inclination at all but he cajoled me into coming and what I saw blew my mind. Here was something that was theatrical and poetic. At once hysterically funny and powerfully moving. At the risk of hyperbole, I can honestly say it was one of those moments you can look back on and recognize as a game changer in your life. I remember standing outside the theatre after and saying to myself, if this is what Shakespeare can be, then I have to figure out how to do that.

Shakespeare@ was partially inspired by my time in England. I lived, studied and worked there for many years and loved the storytelling I experienced there. When I came back what I found (when it came to Shakespeare) was really two options: Large casts in large-scale venues with mic’d actors, or small casts in black box venues presenting two, three, or four-person deconstructions of the plays. Now, that’s not to denigrate those kinds of theatre; I see them all the time and have enjoyed them, but it wasn’t what I wanted to do. I wanted large, diverse casts in intimate settings where the audience could reach out and touch the actors, feel a part of these mythic stories.

Why Shakespeare? Such a simple question and yet I’m not sure I can answer it. For 400 years people have been going back to his plays and finding inspiration or even solace. The stories, the characters, the language, all transcend the everyday and put us in touch with something larger, something truthful. Something we all have within us by virtue of being human. 

Why Jersey City? What kind of impact do you hope Shakespeare@’s productions will have on the local community and the region at large?

Oh, there was no question it was going to be Jersey City. My wife and I have lived here since 2008. We’ve seen the city go through some incredible growth and change. There’s always been a huge arts scene here, which now is only bigger and even more deserving of attention. The artists and community are incredibly supportive of each other. And I think, perhaps, living in the shadow of NYC across the river lends us a scrappiness and hometown feel that I wouldn’t want to be without.

I think what I can honestly say about this production is it’s going to be the kind of theatre that Jersey City residents are used to going across the river to see. We’ve got incredible people involved. We’re aiming to be a vital part of the cultural and social growth of this incredible city.

What can people expect from your production of HAMLET? How do you want people to feel when they’re watching it, and what do you hope they’ll do afterward?

The actors are phenomenal and every day I walk out of rehearsal excited to see what they do tomorrow. Our version of this story is definitely unique. I’m excited to share it and in such a stunning venue. I think even the most seasoned theatre-goers and Hamlet lovers are going to be pleasantly surprised by our production.

I don’t know that I’d want to put an expectation on what to feel. I hope they’ll be thrilled, challenged, moved, inspired.

As for what I hope they do afterwards, I don’t know… Donate? Haha.

It's Women's History Month and what better way for your local live music ambassador to celebrate than to celebrate strong leading "Women In Jazz". This month a series of Women Bandleaders take over my Jazz973@Clements Place Jazz Live Music Series held this month at the Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies. Rutgers IJS Clements Place is managed by the Executive Director of the Jazz Institute Wayne Winborne who has turned this live music venue dedicated to noted Newark historian Clement Price into one very in-demand, special jazz listening venue right in the heart of Newark, NJ.

While there are many events run out of this venue, the Jazz973live music series is run by your local producer, promoter Gregory Burrus, yup that's me. This month I'm honoring a number of what I call large and in charge women making a difference on the Performing Arts scene all over Essex County and beyond.

This first week of March we are showcasing the intriguing Bandleader, Vocalist Songwriter Nadine LaFond.

"Vocalist and songwriter, Nadïne LaFond illustrates with performances that feel more like stirring storytelling sessions mixing diverse styles, cultures, and languages to set the tone. Moving from original tunes to soulful Jazz Standards to arrangements of her favorite “crusty” Blues to Haitian roots to pure Experimentation and Poetry, she and her band take audiences on a haunting and poignant journey.

Nadïne’s solo recording debut, Wisdom Child​, features eleven original tracks mixing styles like blues, jazz, rock, Caribbean roots and experimental that create a unified sound across a chronicle of songs about transforming adversity into light as inspiration to keep moving beyond struggle.

Ghost Friends - "Tree Speak" (Album Review)

Ghost Friends is an indie rock / emo band from Moorestown, New Jersey. Ghost friends is:

“A 4-piece basement dweller howling echos of love and loss. Our reverberations cling to the the rusted pipes cemented into your foundation as the sounds of our angst pry their way through the cracks in your floorboards. We’re down here.”

The band consists of Alec Pezzano, Kyle Forgason, Jimmy Jenca, Justin “Juicy” Condora, and Sid (who is known for ghosting/melancholy). 

Their most recent release, Tree Speak, was released on mischief night (Oct. 30) of 2018 which makes this record extra spooky. Tree Speak was Produced and Engineered by Jim Jenca, the bassist, which is definitely a cool easter egg.

The record begins with “Diving Bell” which immediately has you intrigued with what’s going to come next. It’s instrumental up to about a minute and a half into the song, and then finally resolves with some angsty and catchy lyrics. “Diving Bell” is a solid feeler and introduction to Tree Speak and sets the mood of the EP very well.

The second track, “VertiGogo,” is super poppy and gives me a Mayday Parade feel right away. I really like this track personally because it’s very well-produced and spacey. There’s a lot of dynamic and rhythmic changes in this song which I can definitely appreciate. I really dig the line “you move in stereo,” and if you’re itching for a catchy pop punk breakdown, “VertiGogo” definitely delivers.

Transitioning into track 3, “Malfoy,” Ghost Friends keeps pop punk alive for sure. The intro of this song gives me a heavy Four Year Strong vibe followed by The Starting Line’s “Say it Like You Mean It” once the vocals kick in. Malfoy will have you naturally bopping your head the entirety of this track.

 “Blood Eagle” is the fourth track on Tree Speak, and it’s definitely one of the most emo in my opinion. There’s a lot happening dynamically, and the lyrics definitely pull at your heartstrings. The theme of the song seems to be dealing with the ability to help a loved one grow alongside with you; if both parties could work towards healthier communication.

 The 5th track, “Split Ends,” definitely reminds me of earlier the story so far from the get-go. This is another emotional feeler that copes with the idea of being better off without someone that you once felt very attached to.

Tree Speak closes with “21 grams,” which they released a music video for that you can check out here. This song gives me an optimistic and hopeful feeling, despite all of the heartbreak and loss throughout the record. It mixes happiness, hope, despair, and heartbreak into one place. I think Ghost Friends did a great job summing up the record with this one.

All in all, I think this is Ghost Friends’ best release, but be sure to check out “The Blackmaker Demo” from 2017 as well. There’s plenty more to discover with this band, so head over to their website if you’re interested!

Ringside For A Cause: Stevenson Moses Boxing For Life (Recap)

On Monday, December 10, 2018, Olympic medalist & Pro Boxer Shakur Stevenson, New Jersey Hall of Fame Boxing Coach Wali Moses, along with CEO Robyn Moses were the special guests at the Stevenson Moses Boxing for Life Ringside for a Cause Benefit. The purpose of the benefit event was to raise the organization's profile in additional communities outside its Newark home base, raise awareness of their mission, and garner additional support for upcoming organizational activities.  

The Wilshire Grand Hotel

The event was co-hosted by CC Minton, the Stevenson Moses Boxing for Life Board President, and Gregory Burrus, Live Music Ambassador and Live Music Events Producer and Promoter. The location was the Wilshire Grand Hotel Primavera Lounge in West Orange, NJ.   Primavera is a cozy, Zagat-rated Italian restaurant with a sophisticated ambiance which created a warm and relaxing atmosphere where event attendees mixed and mingled throughout the night.  The staff was warm and friendly, service timely and helpful, and they should be commended.

Round 1: Mix and Mingle - Live Music - Nat Adderley, Jr. and Darryl Clark

Round 1 of the evening kicked off with a highly entertaining live music performance by bassist Darryl Clark of Darryl Clark Fusion and pianist/music director Nat Adderley Jr., who was also songwriter and arranger for 8-time GRAMMY winner Luther Vandross. Nat is a tremendous entertainer and pianist who began playing and writing music incredibly early. His first song, “I'm On My Way,” was recorded when he was just 11 by his legendary father, Nat Sr. and uncle, Cannonball Adderley.  Nat Adderley, Jr. along with local dynamic bassist Darryl Clark kept us very much engaged and entertained by performing a number of memorable jazz and R&B tunes to the immense delight of the event’s attendees. We were very happy that Darryl and Nat gave some of their time and musical gifts to us.

Also during Round 1, Stevenson Moses Boxing for Life Board members Kenny Jones, Yusef Suliman and Doug Freeman spoke to the audience about the organization’s mission and its ongoing commitment to guiding young people.  Yusef made it clear that, “We have to encourage our kids, get behind them and support them in their endeavors.  We at Stevenson Boxing will give kids a chance to watch someone go from not knowing how to do something to knowing how to do it and give them the opportunity to compete all over the world if they choose to.”

Round 2: Main Event - Intimate Conversation with the Stevenson Moses Boxing for Life

Round 2 of the evening’s main event was an intimate conversation with Stevenson Moses Boxing for Life. This interview was excellently moderated by Stephanie Hutton, Board President of the Junior League of Montclair-Newark, Inc. The Junior League of Montclair-Newark is a supportive, amazing organization of women whose mission is to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women, and improve the community through trained volunteers. We were very happy to have Stephanie gives us her time to help make the night’s activities a big success.

During Round 2, Stephanie’s queries gave us an opportunity to get up close and personal with the Boxing For Life leadership team. Robyn, Wali and Shakur expanded on the group’s vision, how it all came about, its importance to the community, and what’s happening now. We all gained extensive insight into the future of Stevenson Moses Boxing for Life.   You can listen to some of the interview right here:

A key point from Stevenson Moses Boxing for Life CEO Robyn Moses that was apparent was her commitment to the community and belief that education is just as important as the tools that boxing provides to young people. 

During the event — and literally flying in from the 2018 Elite and Youth National Championships and Junior and Prep Open held in Utah — was guest honoree Olympian and Top Rank Contracted Pro Boxer Shakur Stevenson. Having landed in Newark as the event started, Shakur arrived in time to join the Round 2 ringside conversation. Shakur clearly agreed that boxing impacted his life tremendously and supported the fact that it gave him discipline and direction, which makes him know he will never give up on any goal he chooses to pursue. The night’s activities moved on to the Q and A portion of Round 2. Many insightful questions came about, including marketing and how it can help move the mission along.

This portion of the night further highlighted how the community supported Shakur in his journey from the city of Newark to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro — or, as NJ Hall of Fame Coach Wali Moses made it clear, that “It does takes a village and that is why we use boxing as a tool to reach the kids.”

Coach Wali’s point was truly emphasized when it comes to ”it takes a village” in this article by Columnist Jim Hague of TeamUSA, where it was noted: 

NEWARK, N.J. -- Thousands of Newark, New Jersey, residents took to the streets on a hot Sunday afternoon in August to welcome home one of their own, an Olympic hero no matter what took place at the recent Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Olympian/Boxer Vikas Krishan Yadav with Former Olympic Coach/NJ Hall of Fame Boxing Coach Wali Moses.

A wonderful surprise for the night was Vikas Krishan Yadav. Vikas is a boxer from the Bhiwani district in the state of Haryana in Northern India. Krishan won a Gold Medal in the 2010 Asian Games in the Lightweight category and a Gold Medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. In the 2016 Olympics, he advanced to the quarterfinal round, defeating highly touted U.S. Olympian Charles Conwell in the Round of 32. Earlier this year, he won a Commonwealth Gold and a Bronze Medal at the Asian Games, becoming the first three-time Asian Games medalist in Indian history. Recently signed to Top Rank boxing as a pro, he is going to train with Coach Wali Moses in Newark, N.J., and with the Indian National Team in Punjab, India.

Round 3 of the evening concluded with networking, a drawing of 50-50 winners, and lots of photo opportunities. It should also be said that the event’s success happened due to some notable attendees, sponsors, and supporters in attendance who gave us their time, expertise and presence.

Chris Raia is a visual artist from Freehold, NJ. By working in different mediums, Chris doesn’t allow himself to get boxed into one specific style. The subject matter of his work has a wide range as well. Taking influence from his favorite animators, he creates anything from still life charcoal drawings to abstract paintings. I spoke to Chris to learn more about his techniques and artistic influences.

The medium you choose to work with varies from one piece to the next (charcoal, watercolor, graphite, etc.). Do you have a favorite? How do you decide which medium you are going to use for the project at hand?

When it comes to a favorite, I’ve definitely been bouncing around, but ever since I  touched Watercolors a couple of years ago I’ve been hooked. I love how it naturally makes marks that are organic and gestural. When it comes to choosing a media, it often feels impulsive. I, of course, try to think about materiality and what using a certain medium over another may suggest, but sometimes being overly analytical can inhibit me from making art at all.

Do your portrait illustrations and paintings come from real life or your imagination?

Both. I think that to be able to draw from your head, you first have to draw from life so that you can build a vocabulary of visual information. It’s important to know the rules before you can effectively break them in your own work. If I don’t know what to draw then just I study what’s around me.

Another thing that stood out to me about your artwork is that you don’t stick to one particular style. It ranges from minimalist doodles to more complex and experimental oil paintings. Is it a conscious decision to create work that ranges in style from piece to piece or does it just turn out that way depending on your mood/mental state/emotions?

I think I bounce around a lot because I am somewhat indecisive and just want to learn everything. I think artists feel a pressure to quickly develop a brand that is easy to package and sell to an audience. Not to say that I won’t eventually have a more singular practice, but I think that artists owe it to themselves to take their time with finding their voice.

Who are some artists that you are influenced by? Do you attempt to drop hints of their work into your own art?

There’s a billion haha, but right now, I have been focusing on a lot of animators. Max Fleischer, Lillian Friedman Astor, Don Hertzfeldt, Pat McHale, Kazuo Oga, Satoshi Kon,  and Alexander Gellner to name a few favorites. I don’t think I intentionally drop hints of them in my work, but I think they always seep through. It’s actually most exciting when people tell me that my work reminds them of an artist that I’ve never even heard of. It’s always great to discover artists who care about the same ideas that I do.

Interview with Derek Garabedian (True State Management)

What are you doing tonight? At 8pm, you could be enjoying the first-ever kick-off show of the “True State Presents:” concert series, at The Wooden Spoon in Bloomfield, NJ. Performing acts include pop-punk band Boy Blue, alternative rockers Wave Break, alternative/emo/shoegaze band Rémis, and Dover/Rockaway rock band Champ. Admission is free. Check out our interview below with concert series organizer Derek Garabedian of the artist development company True State Management.

What's your name, where are you from, where are you based now?

My name is Derek Garabedian. I am originally from Massachusetts, and I am now based in Mountainside, New Jersey.

You run a management company, True State Management. When did that first start? What bands are on the roster, and where are they from?  

True State management started only about 6 or 7 months ago (early summer 2018). The bands we have on roster right now are Hang Tight (@hangtightband), Black Caddy (@blackcaddynyc), The Summoned (@thesummoned), and Cat in the wall (@catinthewallband). All the bands are different genres — pop punk, hip hop, prog metal, and indie rock, in that order. The reason we are working with all genres is to expand our reach as much as possible. We are learning a lot within in each genre and it allows us to be in tune with everything going on. We believe in working with talented people, and talent exists in all genres of music.

Tell us about this new Bloomfield concert series. What is it about Bloomfield that attracts you?

I think North/Central Jersey in general is lacking in live music venues especially for local bands. Bloomfield is a city that has so much going on and is a very diverse place. The opportunity to have different genres and  bring a lot of different people together is very appealing to me.

What inspired you to want to do this? What are your goals?

The reason I am starting the “True State Presents:” concert series is to help create a thriving music scene and community, while at the same time expanding my network to make everything True State is doing reach a larger scale. The goal of the concert series is to create scene that is willing to help each other and bring excitement about local music!

How often are the shows?

 We are scheduled to one show a month right now but will be expanding in the near future. 

What kinds of bands do you hope to participate?

Right now we are starting out with Pop-Punk and Indie style bands. With that being said, we are looking to book for all genres in the future. If anyone out there is interested in booking with us please reach out, we would love to talk!

What kind of audience do you hope to reach?

I would love to bring in all types of passionate and contributing music fans.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get started with music? What's been your personal journey?   

The way I got started in music is a pretty typical story, I think. Me and a bunch of friends used to skateboard and listen to music. We all decided to get different instruments and start a band. The rest was history; I never stopped playing.

My journey is that after years of playing in different bands, I was lucky enough to end up with a record deal and got to tour the country. After that fizzled out and I got a little older, I started a family and took some time off of music. Eventually, I missed music too much and since I can’t tour myself I wanted to use what I learned to help other musicians on their own journey, by using the things I experienced in the past. Now we are here doing what I hoped to accomplish: helping bands! 

What words of advice or encouragement would you give to someone who wants to follow a passion similar to yours, or is maybe facing obstacles similar to what you've faced?  

Our biggest hurdle was to just pull the trigger and get started. I have been working on ideas for a long time, years even, on how to execute and what kinds of paths to take. The key is to just do it and roll with what comes your way. Utilize your passion to help others and make yourself happy.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

The thing I always stress to our bands and music fans is to always support in any way you can and to work as hard as possible to make it happen. I always tell bands, you should be trying to work harder than us (it won’t happen), but that should be the mindset. Help other bands get shows, go out to shows, even if you aren't playing (I know it's a crazy concept). The more friends you make and the bigger the network you have, the better you will do!

Has anyone ever asked you, “Do you want to go floating?” If so, you’ve probably asked, “Well, what do you mean by ‘floating?’” Quantum Floats in Bedminster, NJ is a place where you can do exactly as it sounds — float, in a warm, dark, quiet place. If meditation, relaxation, and getting in touch with your innermost thoughts are your kind of thing, it’s worth checking out — and probably different than any other experience you’ve had so far. Enjoy our interview with Quantum Floats owner Ken Kaplan. What's your name, where are you from, and where are you based now? 

KEN KAPLAN: I’m Ken Kaplan.  I was born in Flushing, New York.  My wife Maria and I have spent the last 30 years living in Bridgewater, NJ. 

You run both a law firm and a floatation center. Which came first?

I’ve been a corporate (business) lawyer for 30 years.  In 2013, my partner Glenn Williams and I co-founded the law firm of Kaplan, Williams and Graffeo – a business law firm based in Morristown, NJ.  Shortly after that, my cousin Brian Graffeo joined the firm as a partner. 

It may sound cliché, but our law firm is unique in the way we interact with our clients to help them achieve their goals and objectives.  As a breed, lawyers are taught to be risk adverse.  Lawyers tend to be good at spotting issues, but often shy away from proposing solutions.  Lawyers often think it is not their province to step into the role of solution provider, especially when the solution requires that they leave the comfort zone of issue spotting and take on the role of business advisor.  That kind of lawyer is a rare breed.  The lawyers at Kaplan Williams are solution providers. That search for solutions is the same driving force that led me to open Quantum Floats in 2015.  Quantum Floats is a floatation tank center located in Bedminster, NJ. 

What is the mission of Quantum Floats?

Our mission is to relieve stress in the community, especially the business community.   At first glance, the law business and the float business may seem unrelated.  In fact, floating can have a profoundly beneficial impact on business.  People engage in the same behavior patterns over and over again.  Those patterns are driven by thoughts below the level of conscious awareness.  Yet, those thoughts are the primary contributors to whether or not we achieve our goals and objectives.  Floating allows a person to examine those deeper thoughts, and the workshops and seminars we offer at Quantum Floats take the floating experience much further by showing our clients how to change those patterns so that they can better express who they are. 

How do you want people to feel once they've used your service? 

What we try to do at Quantum Floats is help our clients understand that whatever emotions, feelings or thoughts come up for them is self-generated and not caused by forces outside of their control.  While we do have to constantly navigate the outside world, we’re in the driver’s seat in terms of how we react to those external experiences.  That’s a great thing because once people start to see that, they can start to change their patterns of behavior and get rid of the anger or stress or anxiety they experience.  Quantum Floats exists so that people can do just that. 

What’s the link between floating and stress-relief?

Floating relieves stress.  Our clients often comment that they are more relaxed and that they bring that relaxation with them outside of their float experience to their jobs and personal lives.  From a scientific perspective, the relaxation our clients experience has to do with the adjustment of thoughts below the level of feelings.  Those deeper thoughts are the ones that generate the stress people experience in their lives.  The ability to access and adjust those thoughts is what makes floating such a powerful modality for relieving stress. 

For our clients who want to take the experience further, we offer one-of-a-kind workshops and seminars where clients learn how to improve the way they think and communicate, which helps them accomplish the professional and personal goals they set for themselves.

How did you first discover floating? What kind of impact has it had on your life?

My experience with floating has made a huge impact on my life.  I first heard about it in 2011 at a business networking event.  I figured I’d give it a try.  Up to that time, I had tried an assortment of conventional and non-conventional modalities to deal with stress.  Most of them helped, but they seemed to fall short of getting to the root cause of the stress.  There weren’t many float centers around at that time, but I found a woman who had a float tank in her house.  It seemed strange at first because I had never even seen a float tank, and my first reaction was “why would I ever want to spend an hour floating in water?”  Yet, after just a few sessions, I knew I was on to something. 

Floating is like meditation on steroids.  It’s like taking an elevator down to the depths of thought – the very place where our stress arises. 

I remember coming out of the float tank very relaxed, and I also remember taking that relaxation with me home and into work.  But the experience was still vague to me.  I didn’t know what the experience was about, much less what I could do with it to address the stress I was experiencing all the time.  I lacked an understanding of how thought works. 

Around that time I met John Worthington, who in the early 1970’s opened up one of the very first float centers in the country. John’s an interesting guy. He knows as much about thought as anyone I’ve ever met, and he’s taken that understanding and put it together in a series of workshops and seminars where people can change their lives.  I know, that’s a big statement, but it’s true.  We hold ourselves back by thought patterns we’ve been running since a very young age.  We offer these seminars now at Quantum.   I’ll tell you this with absolute conviction that while anyone can learn skills to modify thought, not everyone wants to.  It’s work, and the work often involves comes face to face with evasions and denials. 

What kind of people are you looking to connect with?

I’m looking for businesses and people that have the conviction and tenacity to make profound changes in their lives.  

What words of advice or encouragement would you give to someone who wants to follow a similar passion, or is maybe facing obstacles similar to what you've faced?

I’d tell them that most of the good things in life require hard work and that hard work pays off in rewards.  The work we do here at Quantum pays off in rewards in the form of better relationships and in the form of being able to better express who you really are.  Sometimes we assume that the people we admire most had an easy path to where they are now.  Most often, that is not the case.  Successful people have the drive to pick themselves up when they fall, no matter how many times they fall.  Those falls are just lessons.  It is useful to keep this in mind if you’re the kind of person who wants to improve your life by changing the way you think about things.

Wild Dust – “Wild Dust” (EP Review)

Wild Dust is an authentic Rock n’ Roll / Punk Band from South Jersey / Philadelphia area. The band consists of Derrick Robbins on vocals, Connor Rothstein on the rock stick, Eric Labar on the other rock stick, and Dave Girolami on drums. Their self-titled EP was released on August 1, 2017. Wild Dust recorded at Gradwell House in South Jersey.

Wild Dust opens the EP with “Open Graves” which is immediately energetic and punk as hell. I really enjoy the rhythm guitar work in this song, because it truly is pure rock n’ roll. This song is definitely a spooky one. It opens up with “a ghoul appeared to me in these waterless canyons- went by the name of God,” and ends with “I can’t be sorry that my hands were the last hands your cold, dead eyes have seen.”

The band seamlessly transitions with a hot baseline to set the mood for the second track, “Devil’s Water.” Lyrically, this song goes way harder than raining blood. “If it’s raining and it’s pouring, don’t slip in mud, because if you do, you’ll slip in blood tonight.” That’s hard. I noticed a lot of the EP has a variety of bass/drum grooves and breaks which I personally really appreciate. “Devil’s Water” has a sweet instrumental break around the 2:45 mark and ends perfectly. Definitely a track you should peep if you have yet to listen.

The third track, “Red Magic,” has my favorite guitar part on the entire record. It opens with this chorusy guitar riff that strangely reminds me of Nirvana in a good way. I really love the emotional in this song when they chant, “There’s not a soul here to save me” followed by some authentic rock n’ roll solo riffage. I also really loved the feeling of musical exhaustion towards the end of this track. If that doesn’t make sense (most things I say don’t), then check it out for yourself.

The second to last track, “Mojave Flower,” continues the energetic feeling and theme of blood, death, the devil, and most importantly, rock. “I’m a brushfire howling in the night, estranged gunslinger, I’ll murder you tonight” is a bold hook, and I f**k with the vision. This song also has another classic rock solo that’s definitely recorded with a Les Paul, in case you were itching for riffs.

The record closes with “Church in the Wildwood,” which is hands down my favorite title track of a song. This song is a slow jammer at the start. I love the lyrical theme of this song. You can hear the emotion and exhaustion in the vocals, which is a beautiful thing to be able to portray. The idea that you view heaven as “homes built by the Lord,” just to find yourself giving into vices and “finding God” in a bottle is a powerful thing.

Overall, this record is a dynamic journey of aggression, rock n’ roll, and mid-western feeling punk. Lyrically it is very raw, and poetic. I really like how they play with the idea of the Devil and God. This is definitely a record you’d want to throw on if you’re looking to get some aggression out. Also be sure to check out their first single, “Karaoke with the Devil,” from January of 2017.

Side-note: Wild Dust’s Live show is also a trip, and I definitely recommend seeing them. Their Next Show is at The Pharmacy in South Philadelphia, on December 15th, 2018 if you’re looking for something to do.

Who is Shakur Stevenson?

Shakur  Stevenson the Boxer had a very successful career at the Youth Level, winning the 2014 AIBA Youth World Championships and 2014 Summer Youth Olympics. In 2015 he won the Senior U.S. Olympic Trials, thus qualifying for the U.S. boxing team at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. It should also be noted that in the Olympics, Stevenson was dubbed "the next Mayweather" by Floyd Mayweather Jr. himself.  Stevenson turned professional on February 9, 2017 signing a promotional contract with Top Rank. Professionally Shikur has shown off his quickness, defense and punching skills as he has went on to win 9 professional fights, 5 by knockouts and 4 by decision.  (Wikipedia)

In line with expanding their mission into the community, Stevenson Moses Founders recently appointed CC Minton as President of Stevenson Moses Boxing For Life organization. This was noted on a recent episode of the Eric Dawson Radio Show.  A great selection as CC Minton is a nationally recognized, award-winning health and lifestyle empowerment advocate, author, media contributor. CC Minton is a recipient of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition Leadership Award and just recently was awarded the Michael Gray’s Save Our Nations Inc. Dream Maker Award.  

She is also a New Jersey Best Kids Book Author for her children’s book “Daddy’s Greek Potato Pie.” Invited by Michelle Obama’s Press Office, she has covered the Kids State Dinner at the White House. CC has also interviewed food notables such as Marcus Samuelsson as a health and lifestyle editor for Harlem World Magazine, and covered several New York City charity events.

Minton sits on the Board of Governance with the Junior League of Montclair-Newark and has served as a guest panelist at the Jack and Jill of America Childhood Obesity Forum in Washington, D.C. She is a former member of the Wellness Council for the West Orange School District.

Stevenson Moses Ringside for a Cause Benefit

Nat Adderley Jr. is known for his work with Luther Vandross. Nat wrote and arranged  Vandross' first top 20 pop hit, "Stop to Love," and other songs, including the Grammy Award-nominated "Give me the Reason.". Nat also produced tracks on the last seven Vandross studio albums. These include "The Closer I Get To You," a duet with Beyonce Knowles which also appears on Beyoncé’s album Dangerously in Love and won the Grammy Award for best R&B performance by a duo or group in 2004. At this benefit performance, Nat Adderley Jr. along with Darryl will wow the opening session as they play anything from Miles Davis to Stevie Wonder.

 Along the way guest will enjoy Primavera Ristorante ’ bits and bites while networking with attendees, the founders and community dignitaries.

Ordet – “You Are Now Leaving the Boardwalk of Fame & Happiness” (EP Review)

Ordet is the personalized emo-acoustic work of Connor Rothstein from Voorhees Township, New Jersey.  Debuting with the 7-song EP, You Are Now Leaving the Boardwalk of Fame & Happiness in April of 2014, Ordet shares very personal and raw experiences through this collection of songs.  The acoustic album was recorded within two days in the spring of 2014 through a TASCAM Portastudio at his house, which makes this record very pure and unique.

The EP begins with a track titled “It’s a Dirty, Dirty, Lonely Drug,” which has a very beautiful yet moody/spooky feel to it.  I really like how up-close this song is.  It seems to be dealing with the mix of emotions after going through a break-up.  This introduction track covers a range of emotions from sadness to anger and everywhere in between.  The end chants, “If this is all just a means to an end - then a man in my shoes is falling off the edge,” which is a power-emo line.

The second track, “Dying… To Survive,” has great guitar work.  The cord structure and changes are tasteful and expected.  This song deals with reminiscing to the times where we chose our vices to suppress our sadness of losing love. 

The third track, “Everything & Her,” is one of my favorites.  The guitar is very straightforward, catchy, and pretty.  Besides the guitar work, the lyrics are poetically beautiful.  The overall theme of this song deals with loving someone so much to the point where you prioritize them over you; loving someone else more than yourself.  Love is powerful and can make you feel so small when it’s ripped away.  This song is emotional, but also very sweet in regards to Jane Doe. 

“Heartbreak is a Five-Letter Word” is also one of my favorites because it immediately hits you with a feel-good campfire mood.  I personally love Connor’s voice in this one.  I think his voice really shines in this range.  This song continues with the melody of losing love and regret.  The last line, “These songs don’t belong as much to me as they belong to you,” pulls at the heartstrings.

The fifth song, which is essentially the title track, is an emotionally optimistic journey.  It deals with the idea of finally overcoming the past, defeating depression, and essentially just moving on after going through a traumatic situation. 

The sixth song is a 7-minute atmosphere of purely boardwalk noise titled “The Things I’m Sure Of,” and the final song, "(Epilogue) April 5, 2013” is a very catchy acoustic jam.  With sweet electric guitar lead throughout the song, “Epilogue” is reminiscing of the boardwalk, the memories, and the past -- while accepting something and someone new, the overall theme of moving on and becoming “gone" from someone else’s life.  It has a very hopeful and optimistic mood, which ends the record perfectly.  

Overall, You Are Now Leaving the Boardwalk of Fame & Happiness is a raw and emotional journey of love lost, youthful summer nights, missing friends, and coping with those feelings.  The first half is dealing with the initial frustrations and sadness, and the second half is life playing its course and turning those settings of defeat into lessons.  You can feel the growth throughout the EP, which is a beautiful thing Ordet accomplishes.

Suntitle - "The Loss Of" (EP Review)

Suntitle is an alternative emo band from Port Republic, New Jersey.  The band consists of Joe McGarvey on guitar/vocals, Kyle Fisher on guitar/vocals, Peter Bariexca on bass, and Dan Mattera on drums.  Forming in June of 2014, they’ve gone through a change in name and brand and released their most recent EP The Loss Of, which has amazing artwork. 

With influences such as Turnover, Citizen, Superheaven, and Basement, they deliver a very raw, organic, and intimate sound.  They have a music video out for their song, “Art,” which premiered on New Noise Magazine. You can check that out here. 

The Loss Of was released in February of 2018 through GTR Records which is an independent label located in Landsdale, Pennsylvania. 

Suntitle’s EP opens up with a song called “Trust” that immediately ropes you in with intimate and moody bass and guitars.  I love how they play with low vocals with layers of raspy and aggressive vocals overtop.  It gives their music a lot of character, and keeps it interesting and energetic.  The song is 5 minutes of intimacy and discusses holding on to hope even when you feel as though your faith in life is draining.  I really enjoy the way this song ends with the cord structure differentiation, and the tempo changes.  Definitely a solid start to the record.  

The second song, “Comradery,” gives me an immediate balance and composure “I Can’t Do This Alone” feel mixed with some Title Fight.  It’s one of those songs you just find yourself immediately moving your head to.  I really like the guitar work in this one, and the chorus is super catchy.  Again, they play with vocal octaves that are super tasteful.  

The third song, “Amity,” keeps the momentum moving very well.  This song is super poetic and has beautiful broken and vulnerable melodies.  I don’t really need to say much more than that for this one, other than to just give it a listen yourself.

The fourth song on the EP, “Faith,” brings back the theme of faith, and I immediately caught my head boppin’ again.  This song is super energetic right away, and about half way through the song Joe sings, “wake me up from this nightmare” which is the juiciest hook and change in rhythmic feel.  This song reminds me of Title Fight’s “The Last Thing You Forget,” Turnover’s “Magnolia,” and a Code Orange influence with the guitar work about 12 seconds into the song.  You’ll know what I mean, but you have to go listen.  I don’t make the rules. Anyway, this is one of my top tracks from The Loss Of.  From 2:40 on, it just slaps.

The second to last song, “Life,” is a heart-wrencher.  It’s dynamo, aggressive, and spacey.  I really like the purity of these lyrics, and the portrayal of words through their melodies.  They discuss the use of drugs and watching loved ones deteriorate to addiction, which is a very tough subject to talk about, and they do so perfectly.  This one will definitely make you feel and think. 

Suntitle finishes the record off with “Art” which gives me Turnover’s “Magnolia” vibe again, which I personally think is a super underrated record.  This song is a certified bop and up my alley.  It concludes The Loss Of with aggression and passion.  I love the stops and silence towards the end, and Peter low key rips a quick hot riff before they close it off.

All in all, this record is something to check out when you’re upset, angry, or sad.  There’s a lot of emotion in The Loss Of and, most importantly, authenticity.  I’ve seen these guys play many times, and they are very tight.  The production quality is great and portrays Suntitle perfectly.  Definitely check this record out the next time you have a car ride or 20 minutes free if you haven’t already.

Interview with DJ Michael Demby

What's your name, where are you from, where are you based now? 

I'm Michael Demby. I grew up in New Providence, NJ and currently live in downtown Jersey City.

Tell us about your work. How would you describe your style? Where do you record/perform? Who are your influences, personally and/or professionally? 

Since 1998, I have been a DJ/entertainer and additionally host trivia and karaoke events. I've worked hard at developing a polished and understated approach, while providing a professional “cheese-free” method to announcements and MC work.

My performances are at private events where I am given the privilege to provide music at weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, birthday parties, corporate events, and more, and can comfortably bounce from retro classics to today's top hits in pop, hip-hop, rock, house, reggae, disco, or whatever will keep guests dancing.

Influence comes from so many different places, but most specifically, those with whom I've worked in the past as well as my family and friends, all whose love of music has always drawn positive attention from anyone around to hear it. 

What's the meaning or inspiration behind what you do? How do you want people to feel when they experience your work?

It is hard to explain, but the drive behind what I do can be summed up by the special feeling I get when clients realize that their event is going to be fun, unique, and different.  I have received some of the most touching words of thanks and detailed insight about why my DJ services were chosen out of so many other great options. 

I want people to feel relaxed and comfortable, knowing that I love working with each client to truly personalize every aspect for one of the greatest day in their life.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get started with music? What's been your personal journey? Are there any artists, bands, or producers who you'd love to collaborate with one day? 

I grew up in a house where music was always on, which offered a unique education and prepared me for playing an instrument, the Alto Sax, which I still play to this day. At 16, I started taking dancing lessons to impress some girls and during a party, my skills at leading a large group were noticed by the DJ. He then brought me on be a motivational dancer, explained some of the basics, put on the Electric Slide, and said "Okay, now go out there and get people up dancing!" 

I would love to run the world's largest game of Coke and Pepsi one day — that would be so much fun!

What words of advice or encouragement would you give to someone who wants to follow a similar passion, or is maybe facing obstacles similar to what you've faced? 

Learn as much as you can from someone whom you consider to be an expert and sees what makes you unique. Then take that characteristic and make a living with it!

Interview with America Part Two

America Part Two is the newest collaboration between Alex Fabio, Fred Koechlin and Sam Weingarten. The group recorded their first EP, Pure, back in 2017 and have hit the ground running since then. AP2 is one of the hardest working bands I have ever seen in my life. Their energy is unmatchable and they tour relentlessly. Luckily for me, America Part Two was sweet enough to let me bug them with a few questions and I am endlessly grateful they did so. Thank you guys!

How did you guys come up with the name "America Part Two"?

The name America Part Two means literally everything to us. America Part Two is a concept already in the minds of this generation’s revolutionaries, we're just putting the pen to paper. Freddie wrote the song, "America Pt. II" first, and when the magnitude of that title hit us, we had to pursue its power.

Influences?

Fred: I’d say some of my biggest influences as a songwriter are Robert Johnson, Lead Belly, Link Wray, Simon and Garfunkel, Creedence, Biggie, Linkin Park, So Wrong it’s Right, Paranoid, Red Bank, The Orb, Gillian Welch, My Family and Friends in Music.

As a Collective Energy, I think we take a lot of influence from huge electric guitar rock and music with soul. We take influence from everything from Jimi and Janis to the early CBGB groups to a lot of 90s alternative. The political and social climate of the world is probably our biggest influence.

Alex: In middle school, I got enveloped into the late 2000’s Bamboozle scene. All Time Low was the #1 band that, not only stole my heart, but also taught me that I can do this. Also love 90’s bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, and Rage Against The Machine. That era saw 6-figure contracts and artistic freedom. What a combination!

Sam: Biggest influences personally are My Chemical Romance, Enter Shikari, The Beatles, Sublime, and August Burns Red.

Favorite song to play live? Why?

Alex: “Freedom” & “Split.” Not only are they the newest, but the messages of these songs lyrically and instrumentally resonate with us so much as the band we are right now.

Fred: “Freedom.” It’s one of our newest songs. We exert so much energy in our live set and we’ve been jamming it since the last tour. I feel on top of the world screaming a song this important to us. With it being unreleased, it’s nice to hit people with something they don’t expect during the set.

It’s also so important to me on an artistic level because at the time of writing... Alex, Jake [Newcomb] and I ripped “Freedom” out of thin air. We all had such equal and powerful roles in creating this song. Looking back it really felt smooth, effortless, GIANT and in-control. Like the song was already there.

Sam: “Freedom.” The song is a full journey that somehow ends right where it began. It’s impossible to "go through the motions" playing that one. Raw power, generated by each of us individually, cycling back and forth between our 3-piece dynamic at every note.

Tips for going out on tour?

Fred: BUY A FORD VAN. Pack extra Undies and Socks!!! Extra EVERYTHING! Extra cables, instruments and anything for hygiene/safety and whatever you need to live out of a van. Don’t pack anything unnecessary (30 t-shirts). Depending on how long you’re on the road… always save as much as possible! Duh! If the van can’t make it home, neither can you! We always stock up on protein bars, granola, cereal and Peanut Butter Sandwiches. Always have extra water and a spare tire. If you need to sleep in the van, sleep at Walmart Supercenters.

Sam: We haven't done this yet but a Planet Fitness membership to get a nice shower every day. You're probably gonna wear the same shirt for 3 days straight so load up on undies and socks. Clif Bars, bananas, WATER, GOOD food for energy. You can get your fast food anywhere. It's usually a marathon, not a sprint. And lay it down every night when it's time to play, regardless of who's in the room.

Favorite place to play?

Alex: The original Asbury Lanes will forever have my heart as the best venue in the world! But since that’s long gone, I really love Mohawk Place in Buffalo and Fubar in St. Louis. Great stages and great sound.

Fred: My favorite places to play in NJ are the Asbury Brewery, TCNJ and our spot in Red Bank. Traveling around, we love to stop at State Parks, too. Recently we stopped in Ithaca and really enjoyed our time there. Some of my favorite places I’ve played elsewhere are the Rebel Lounge in Phoenix, The Alleyway at Augie’s Coffeehouse in LA, Gold Sounds in Brooklyn, a barn in Iowa. Boaz, Alabama! Fubar in St. Louis, Oregon, Denver and Webster Hall Underground rip!

Gregory Burrus Joins Nonprofit Board of Maplewood Community Music

As some may know, I love finding musicians and helping them share their musical gifts with you, the listeners in South Orange, Maplewood, the Valley in Orange, Newark and other parts of Northern New Jersey and beyond.

Another live music gem in our towns is the Maplewood Community Music organization (MCM) and I, Gregory Burrus, am very happy and honored to announce that I have been chosen as a newly appointed Maplewood Community Music board member. I am thrilled at the opportunity to be part of such a vibrant, community-focused organization that is filled with truly dedicated musicians. This will allow me to continue to move forward my ongoing mission of supporting the arts and spreading the word of sharing their great gifts. 

This dedicated group of volunteer musicians and conductors work towards MCM's major goals of giving hobbyist musicians the opportunity to perform and bring music to Maplewood, South Orange, and other nearby communities. Along with getting involved with strategy and direction; I will also be performing social media marketing services and other publicity related activities.  

About Maplewood Community Music

Maplewood Community Music (MCM), a non-profit based in Maplewood, NJ, was founded in 2003 by Jim Buchanan and Susan Williams. Jim was the Cultural Affairs Supervisor for Maplewood and had over 34 years of experience in music education and conducting.  Susan had played in the Rutgers Band and after a number of years without playing; she approached Jim Buchanan about starting a band.  Jim suggested starting rehearsals for a concert band and a jazz band for which he became the musical director. It should be noted that the first rehearsal had only six musicians; the group now has grown to well over 50.

Maplewood Community Music Mission

Now in 2018 celebrating almost 16 years of making music, the mission has expanded to include the following:

• bring various types of music to Maplewood and the surrounding areas,

• provide local student and adult musicians with the opportunity to join a community ensemble and continue their love of playing and performing,

• perform youth outreach that supports the student musicians and inspires our youth to enjoy and possibly play an instrument,

• partner with other organizations to bring music-related events to the area,

• provide resources including private lesson teachers and musicians for hire

Maplewood Community Music Performances In the Community

MCM is proud to support community events and community/youth music enrichment programs and has a number of ensembles.

Swing Town Big Band

One of the places Maplewood Community performs is in the South Orange annual Downtown After Sundown Live Music Concerts. Under the direction of Trombonist Ben Williams, the band consists of a Big Band-style jazz ensemble featuring Saxophones, Trumpets, Trombones, Rhythm Section, and Vocalists.

Over the last few years, these large ensembles have grown to consist of 19 pieces, when they perform in South Orange’s Spiotta Park. The crowds are always thoroughly entertained, and I love Jazz Big Bands that take you back in time so it’s awesome to me.

The Maplewood Concert Band

I was able to catch the Concert Band termed “Chestnuts in The Park.” They performed at the truly beautiful South Mountain Reservation Boat House this past summer. This band is a wind ensemble featuring woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments.

It was an absolutely wonderful performance against a gorgeous backdrop.  Just listening is magic to the ears.

Maplewood Porch Fest

Another great event supported by Maplewood Community Music is the Maplewood Porchfest. Just imagine strolling the streets of Maplewood and stopping at one porch then another and another to enjoy music and entertainment all day long. That’s Porchfest!

A fun and free event every year in the Maplewood, Hilton neighborhood on Labor Day Sunday, rain date Monday. The event kicks off at noon in front of the community center at DeHart park with music, balloons, paper event schedules with maps, a fundraiser bake sale, and a rehearsal for the "honk parade" to start the event. Everyone in the family is welcome to make music and march!

Maple wood's first Porchfest featured 30+ bands performing at more than 20 porches around the Hilton neighborhood. Last year there were 40 plus porches and bands. Folks also got to enjoy a free jitney service running through the middle of the area, so there's a little less walking and a lot more enjoying the fun all over the Hilton neighborhood. And yes, I am very happy to find bands for this voluntary event.

Teachers Turn Concert

This community is great because money for a baby grand was available from an estate. Maplewood Community Music (MCM) facilitated the purchase of the piano and helped find a home with the town in DeHart Park Community center.

The piano teachers of South Orange, Maplewood (SOMA) were thrilled about the new concert grand piano and were grateful to Maplewood Community Music for making that whole endeavor possible. They then developed a benefit concert to celebrate the new piano.  They called it "Teachers' Turn." It featured most of the piano teachers actually performing and not the students. It was an absolutely a wonderful afternoon of piano recitals to a packed house. All proceeds from the event were sent to a scholarship fund to help provide private lesson opportunities for kids in Maplewood/South Orange whose families don't have the means to do so themselves. 

In Summary

The Maplewood Community Music ensembles consist of some very dedicated volunteer musicians who wish to practice and perform challenging music in a fun, low-key setting.  They meet locally on a Wednesday evening, practice, have fun and enjoy themselves. The Maplewood Concert Band, Swing Band and various small ensembles offer free performances throughout the year.  This group also thinks up new ideas and supports other endeavors like the Teachers’ Turn Piano Concerts and the awesome Maplewood Porchfest event.

With all that, I am very happy to have been selected to join the Board of the Maplewood Community Music (MCM) nonprofit. More to come and will definitely work hard to get the word out about this fabulous organization.

Modern Chemistry - "Take A Second" (Interview)

Modern Chemistry is back and better than ever. After touring with Taking Back Sunday, Every Time I Die and Mayday Parade (to name a few), Modern Chemistry released their latest single, “Take A Second” with a very nostalgic music video as well. Having been a fan for a while, I reached out to lead singer and guitarist, Joe Zorzi, who was sweet enough to answer some questions about “Take A Second,” their music video and future plans. Thanks again, Joe!

Your latest single, “Take A Second” is great. When did you guys write that song?

Thank you! It was actually written a few months back. I had a little demo station set up at our practice space and wrote it one day before our band practice. It had a really fresh feel to it, so we started working on it as a band pretty soon after.  

What was the inspiration behind “Take A Second”?

It's really a hopeful song about dealing with anxieties. It's about those moments where things just don't really make sense and you're just rolling through it all. But also realizing or hoping that something's going to change soon.

Where was “Take A Second” recorded? Who produced?

We recorded it with Erik Romero. We've been friends with him for years, and it finally felt like the right time to work together on this concept. Erik is incredibly versatile. We explained the vibe we were going for and he completely understood that and pushed us in some cool, new directions with tones and layers.

The video for “Take A Second” fits so well. How did you guys come up with the concept?

Thanks! We knew we wanted to make this video ourselves and we knew that we were going to be filming it on a VHS camcorder. After moving through a few different concepts, things really started to take shape once we decided we were going to have a bunch of TVs streaming different pieces of our lives at the same time. The tone was more important than anything and the final result is pretty much exactly what we were hoping to achieve.  

What is the current Modern Chemistry lineup?

I'm Joe, I sing and play guitar. Jesse plays drums and Brendan plays guitar and also sings.

What is next for Modern Chemistry?

You'll be hearing some more music before the year is out. We've got a few shows lined up that are going to be really fun. (Past shows: October 12th at the Saint with Hodera, Blaise, and Mackenzie Brown. October 28th at the Bowery Electric with Toy Cars). We're constantly writing new music.  

Anything else you’d like to add?

We're just happy to be here and happy that people seem to be resonating with the new music. We're really excited about where we are as musicians right now and we're going to try and keep that going the best we can.

Meet the McClure Twins at ValleyArts Harvest Fest

ValleyArts and CC Minton are asking the community to come together and celebrate with our Harvest Fest Ambassadors - Alexis and Ava McClure. This annual event will be hosted in the ValleyArts Courtyard for a Meet and Greet with the McClure Twins, enjoy harvest fest games, participate in a popular child-friendly live musical participatory performance led by Soul Xpressiion School of the Arts, take part in a history making Tile painting project, enjoy Mini Daddy Greek Potato Pie give-a-ways from Supreme Bakery, lots of photo opportunities and more.

This is a free event, open to the public and all we ask for is canned good donations that will be collected by representatives from our local food pantries. We invite you to stop by drop-off a donation, welcome bring your kids and have some fun with us in this season of giving.

McClure Twins

The McClure Twins’ parents began documenting the twins lives through pictures and videos and started "twin talks" with Ava and Alexis as their funny personalities were enjoyable. In one video, "Twins Realize They Look the Same", Alexis got upset because she was one minute younger than her identical twin Ava. As Alexis cooled down, she realized she was a little bit taller than Ava, which prompted Ava to meltdown. This feel-good moment went mega-viral, with millions of views around the world. In late October, 2016, the twins were on the Today Show and Good Morning America and have subsequently worked with Disney, Facebook and many other notable organizations. The rest is history. They set out to make positive high-quality content that represents their values of humor, compassion, empathy, & family values, while also being entertaining. With a focus on delivering positive content in an often negative world, the girls early viral success prompted them to produced more viral videos and use their influence for good.
