EP Review - LUCAS by Pyrex

Pyrex is the musical project of Luke Knoblauch from South Jersey. Pyrex describes himself as Ambient Rap, and debuted his first EP Lucas in September of 2018. Pyrex said, “I wrote this on my notepads app over the years and just turned it into music.” He also gives a special thanks to Jayradda, Kevin Dunne, Mike Kratz, and Nick Fysz for their contribution to Lucas.

The introduction song is “MSbang! (feat. jayradda)” which opens up with a vocal heavy hook that has you bopping your head immediately. The hook “Self-reflection is that all I ever know, are you just bored, or should I just take you home? Always texting on your cellular phone, I try to just let you go” cuts deep, and the song deals with coping with the emotional loss of a loved one. One of my favorites is featured on this track too: Jayradda (or Jorge Estrada) of comeupcomedown and Heather Grey. Jayradda has the prettiest voice, and it especially shines in “MSBang!” He has super tasteful vocal runs and emotional lyrics in this track.  

The EP seems to talk about the struggle of loved loss, battling with substances and vices, and the love of streetwear. Overall, Pyrex is portraying that although life can be tough and sadness prominent, he is still striving to live his best life.

The second track, “Happy”, is hands down my favorite track on Lucas. The hook “I just want to make my way back home” is one of the catchiest things I’ve heard. The beat is very upbeat and catchy. “Happy” brings you sadness, optimism, and nostalgia. Everybody interprets songs differently, which makes music so beautiful. This track definitely hit me with nostalgia, and just makes me want to drive my car blasting “Happy.”

The third track, “Dead,” opens up with an old-time sample, and discusses the topic of wanting to quit life; the overall idea of just feeling stuck and stagnant. I really love the second verse’s melody and choice of harmonies around the 2-minute mark. The beat and dissonance of the vocals gives me an older Kid Cudi kind of vibe.

“Kai” is the fourth track off of Lucas, and this is definitely up there with “Happy” for me personally. The beat and piano in the song is beautiful, and the lyrical content discusses the use of drugs, smoking, and drinking. The vocals are melodically beautiful throughout the song, but Pyrex’s vocals especially shine through towards the end around the 2:45 mark.

The second to last track, “Space Cowboy,” is another favorite that almost acts as a reprise and brings back the theme of “finding your way back home” that was introduced earlier in “Happy.” This track’s super spacey and dreamy, which is right up my alley. It definitely gives me an older Kid Cudi vibe again.

The last track, “Dreamin.In.Reverse.flp,” was produced by Jayradda and is another beautifully atmospheric track. The beat on this song has an uplifting feeling while still glowing with tension. I think this song concludes Pyrex’s EP perfectly, and the production value is Grade A.

All in all, I think this was a solid initial release. It talks about subjects that are tough to talk about, has a solid consistency of sound, and is purely authentic . Be sure to check out Pyrex’s single, “Truly Free”, if you’re looking for more Pyrex.

Ghost Friends - "Tree Speak" (Album Review)

Ghost Friends is an indie rock / emo band from Moorestown, New Jersey. Ghost friends is:

“A 4-piece basement dweller howling echos of love and loss. Our reverberations cling to the the rusted pipes cemented into your foundation as the sounds of our angst pry their way through the cracks in your floorboards. We’re down here.”

The band consists of Alec Pezzano, Kyle Forgason, Jimmy Jenca, Justin “Juicy” Condora, and Sid (who is known for ghosting/melancholy). 

Their most recent release, Tree Speak, was released on mischief night (Oct. 30) of 2018 which makes this record extra spooky. Tree Speak was Produced and Engineered by Jim Jenca, the bassist, which is definitely a cool easter egg.

The record begins with “Diving Bell” which immediately has you intrigued with what’s going to come next. It’s instrumental up to about a minute and a half into the song, and then finally resolves with some angsty and catchy lyrics. “Diving Bell” is a solid feeler and introduction to Tree Speak and sets the mood of the EP very well.

The second track, “VertiGogo,” is super poppy and gives me a Mayday Parade feel right away. I really like this track personally because it’s very well-produced and spacey. There’s a lot of dynamic and rhythmic changes in this song which I can definitely appreciate. I really dig the line “you move in stereo,” and if you’re itching for a catchy pop punk breakdown, “VertiGogo” definitely delivers.

Transitioning into track 3, “Malfoy,” Ghost Friends keeps pop punk alive for sure. The intro of this song gives me a heavy Four Year Strong vibe followed by The Starting Line’s “Say it Like You Mean It” once the vocals kick in. Malfoy will have you naturally bopping your head the entirety of this track.

 “Blood Eagle” is the fourth track on Tree Speak, and it’s definitely one of the most emo in my opinion. There’s a lot happening dynamically, and the lyrics definitely pull at your heartstrings. The theme of the song seems to be dealing with the ability to help a loved one grow alongside with you; if both parties could work towards healthier communication.

 The 5th track, “Split Ends,” definitely reminds me of earlier the story so far from the get-go. This is another emotional feeler that copes with the idea of being better off without someone that you once felt very attached to.

Tree Speak closes with “21 grams,” which they released a music video for that you can check out here. This song gives me an optimistic and hopeful feeling, despite all of the heartbreak and loss throughout the record. It mixes happiness, hope, despair, and heartbreak into one place. I think Ghost Friends did a great job summing up the record with this one.

All in all, I think this is Ghost Friends’ best release, but be sure to check out “The Blackmaker Demo” from 2017 as well. There’s plenty more to discover with this band, so head over to their website if you’re interested!

Wild Dust – “Wild Dust” (EP Review)

Wild Dust is an authentic Rock n’ Roll / Punk Band from South Jersey / Philadelphia area. The band consists of Derrick Robbins on vocals, Connor Rothstein on the rock stick, Eric Labar on the other rock stick, and Dave Girolami on drums. Their self-titled EP was released on August 1, 2017. Wild Dust recorded at Gradwell House in South Jersey.

Wild Dust opens the EP with “Open Graves” which is immediately energetic and punk as hell. I really enjoy the rhythm guitar work in this song, because it truly is pure rock n’ roll. This song is definitely a spooky one. It opens up with “a ghoul appeared to me in these waterless canyons- went by the name of God,” and ends with “I can’t be sorry that my hands were the last hands your cold, dead eyes have seen.”

The band seamlessly transitions with a hot baseline to set the mood for the second track, “Devil’s Water.” Lyrically, this song goes way harder than raining blood. “If it’s raining and it’s pouring, don’t slip in mud, because if you do, you’ll slip in blood tonight.” That’s hard. I noticed a lot of the EP has a variety of bass/drum grooves and breaks which I personally really appreciate. “Devil’s Water” has a sweet instrumental break around the 2:45 mark and ends perfectly. Definitely a track you should peep if you have yet to listen.

The third track, “Red Magic,” has my favorite guitar part on the entire record. It opens with this chorusy guitar riff that strangely reminds me of Nirvana in a good way. I really love the emotional in this song when they chant, “There’s not a soul here to save me” followed by some authentic rock n’ roll solo riffage. I also really loved the feeling of musical exhaustion towards the end of this track. If that doesn’t make sense (most things I say don’t), then check it out for yourself.

The second to last track, “Mojave Flower,” continues the energetic feeling and theme of blood, death, the devil, and most importantly, rock. “I’m a brushfire howling in the night, estranged gunslinger, I’ll murder you tonight” is a bold hook, and I f**k with the vision. This song also has another classic rock solo that’s definitely recorded with a Les Paul, in case you were itching for riffs.

The record closes with “Church in the Wildwood,” which is hands down my favorite title track of a song. This song is a slow jammer at the start. I love the lyrical theme of this song. You can hear the emotion and exhaustion in the vocals, which is a beautiful thing to be able to portray. The idea that you view heaven as “homes built by the Lord,” just to find yourself giving into vices and “finding God” in a bottle is a powerful thing.

Overall, this record is a dynamic journey of aggression, rock n’ roll, and mid-western feeling punk. Lyrically it is very raw, and poetic. I really like how they play with the idea of the Devil and God. This is definitely a record you’d want to throw on if you’re looking to get some aggression out. Also be sure to check out their first single, “Karaoke with the Devil,” from January of 2017.

Side-note: Wild Dust’s Live show is also a trip, and I definitely recommend seeing them. Their Next Show is at The Pharmacy in South Philadelphia, on December 15th, 2018 if you’re looking for something to do.

Ordet – “You Are Now Leaving the Boardwalk of Fame & Happiness” (EP Review)

Ordet is the personalized emo-acoustic work of Connor Rothstein from Voorhees Township, New Jersey.  Debuting with the 7-song EP, You Are Now Leaving the Boardwalk of Fame & Happiness in April of 2014, Ordet shares very personal and raw experiences through this collection of songs.  The acoustic album was recorded within two days in the spring of 2014 through a TASCAM Portastudio at his house, which makes this record very pure and unique.

The EP begins with a track titled “It’s a Dirty, Dirty, Lonely Drug,” which has a very beautiful yet moody/spooky feel to it.  I really like how up-close this song is.  It seems to be dealing with the mix of emotions after going through a break-up.  This introduction track covers a range of emotions from sadness to anger and everywhere in between.  The end chants, “If this is all just a means to an end - then a man in my shoes is falling off the edge,” which is a power-emo line.

The second track, “Dying… To Survive,” has great guitar work.  The cord structure and changes are tasteful and expected.  This song deals with reminiscing to the times where we chose our vices to suppress our sadness of losing love. 

The third track, “Everything & Her,” is one of my favorites.  The guitar is very straightforward, catchy, and pretty.  Besides the guitar work, the lyrics are poetically beautiful.  The overall theme of this song deals with loving someone so much to the point where you prioritize them over you; loving someone else more than yourself.  Love is powerful and can make you feel so small when it’s ripped away.  This song is emotional, but also very sweet in regards to Jane Doe. 

“Heartbreak is a Five-Letter Word” is also one of my favorites because it immediately hits you with a feel-good campfire mood.  I personally love Connor’s voice in this one.  I think his voice really shines in this range.  This song continues with the melody of losing love and regret.  The last line, “These songs don’t belong as much to me as they belong to you,” pulls at the heartstrings.

The fifth song, which is essentially the title track, is an emotionally optimistic journey.  It deals with the idea of finally overcoming the past, defeating depression, and essentially just moving on after going through a traumatic situation. 

The sixth song is a 7-minute atmosphere of purely boardwalk noise titled “The Things I’m Sure Of,” and the final song, "(Epilogue) April 5, 2013” is a very catchy acoustic jam.  With sweet electric guitar lead throughout the song, “Epilogue” is reminiscing of the boardwalk, the memories, and the past -- while accepting something and someone new, the overall theme of moving on and becoming “gone" from someone else’s life.  It has a very hopeful and optimistic mood, which ends the record perfectly.  

Overall, You Are Now Leaving the Boardwalk of Fame & Happiness is a raw and emotional journey of love lost, youthful summer nights, missing friends, and coping with those feelings.  The first half is dealing with the initial frustrations and sadness, and the second half is life playing its course and turning those settings of defeat into lessons.  You can feel the growth throughout the EP, which is a beautiful thing Ordet accomplishes.

Suntitle - "The Loss Of" (EP Review)

Suntitle is an alternative emo band from Port Republic, New Jersey.  The band consists of Joe McGarvey on guitar/vocals, Kyle Fisher on guitar/vocals, Peter Bariexca on bass, and Dan Mattera on drums.  Forming in June of 2014, they’ve gone through a change in name and brand and released their most recent EP The Loss Of, which has amazing artwork. 

With influences such as Turnover, Citizen, Superheaven, and Basement, they deliver a very raw, organic, and intimate sound.  They have a music video out for their song, “Art,” which premiered on New Noise Magazine. You can check that out here. 

The Loss Of was released in February of 2018 through GTR Records which is an independent label located in Landsdale, Pennsylvania. 

Suntitle’s EP opens up with a song called “Trust” that immediately ropes you in with intimate and moody bass and guitars.  I love how they play with low vocals with layers of raspy and aggressive vocals overtop.  It gives their music a lot of character, and keeps it interesting and energetic.  The song is 5 minutes of intimacy and discusses holding on to hope even when you feel as though your faith in life is draining.  I really enjoy the way this song ends with the cord structure differentiation, and the tempo changes.  Definitely a solid start to the record.  

The second song, “Comradery,” gives me an immediate balance and composure “I Can’t Do This Alone” feel mixed with some Title Fight.  It’s one of those songs you just find yourself immediately moving your head to.  I really like the guitar work in this one, and the chorus is super catchy.  Again, they play with vocal octaves that are super tasteful.  

The third song, “Amity,” keeps the momentum moving very well.  This song is super poetic and has beautiful broken and vulnerable melodies.  I don’t really need to say much more than that for this one, other than to just give it a listen yourself.

The fourth song on the EP, “Faith,” brings back the theme of faith, and I immediately caught my head boppin’ again.  This song is super energetic right away, and about half way through the song Joe sings, “wake me up from this nightmare” which is the juiciest hook and change in rhythmic feel.  This song reminds me of Title Fight’s “The Last Thing You Forget,” Turnover’s “Magnolia,” and a Code Orange influence with the guitar work about 12 seconds into the song.  You’ll know what I mean, but you have to go listen.  I don’t make the rules. Anyway, this is one of my top tracks from The Loss Of.  From 2:40 on, it just slaps.

The second to last song, “Life,” is a heart-wrencher.  It’s dynamo, aggressive, and spacey.  I really like the purity of these lyrics, and the portrayal of words through their melodies.  They discuss the use of drugs and watching loved ones deteriorate to addiction, which is a very tough subject to talk about, and they do so perfectly.  This one will definitely make you feel and think. 

Suntitle finishes the record off with “Art” which gives me Turnover’s “Magnolia” vibe again, which I personally think is a super underrated record.  This song is a certified bop and up my alley.  It concludes The Loss Of with aggression and passion.  I love the stops and silence towards the end, and Peter low key rips a quick hot riff before they close it off.

All in all, this record is something to check out when you’re upset, angry, or sad.  There’s a lot of emotion in The Loss Of and, most importantly, authenticity.  I’ve seen these guys play many times, and they are very tight.  The production quality is great and portrays Suntitle perfectly.  Definitely check this record out the next time you have a car ride or 20 minutes free if you haven’t already.

Space Cadets - "We Deserve Better" (EP Review)

Space Cadets is a two-piece emo/math rock band from Mount Holly, New Jersey. The band consists of Jarrett Wenzel on Drums/Vocals, and Matt Trinkle on Guitar. We Deserve Better is Space Cadets’ second EP release. The record was recorded by Matt Bogacki at Blue Light Digital Sound and was released in June of 2017. They have CDs and currently have 5 cassettes available (courtesy of Cheap Plastic Records). 

The record opens with “New Vermont” which is a purely melodic and vulnerable song. Lyrically, it seems to discuss an internal struggle of stress and your mental health. "I can't lie to you, but I've been trying to, and I might go through with it, ‘cause I'm sick of wanting to die, every single time the stress hits.” I think this is discussing the ability to make a choice and be open in communication versus trying to lie; the temporary fix. This can bottle up and the stress can start to feel like too much, and this song covers that perfectly in a minute and a half. 

The record transitions seamlessly into “Vanilla,” where the drums are introduced with a sad jazzy-sounding melodic guitar. The beginning seems to be reminiscing moments of admiration with a loved one, followed by coping with them moving away and the hardships of moving on. It picks up to a mathy beat and instrumental break where it transitions to a much more emotional and dreamy vibe. I love the rhythm throughout this entire song because it seems like you hear something new with each time you listen. Whether it be a ghost note, or hi-hat accent, it’s always super tasteful. Musically, I think this is my favorite song on the record.

The third song on the record, “Disconnecting,” is hands down one of the catchiest and most "finger-pointy” songs. The chorus is a jammer that speaks for itself: "3 years takes its toll on me I can't be everything I know you need, I'm not taking this lightly, but I can't help you when no one’s helping me.” My finger is aggressively pointing through the entirety of this chorus. That’s all you need to know; its a great time. 

The last song on the record is called “In the Shirt You Gave Me,” and it continues with the theme of heartbreak of 3 years. This track essentially wraps up the entire theme of We Deserve Better. The transitions and dynamics are artistic and charming to the ear. My favorite part is the ending— almost breakdown—which closes the record perfectly. 

This record is short, sweet, and powerful. Overall, it just gives me a feeling of genuinity and vulnerability. Their following and most recent EP, Coming Along Slowly, was released in July and is definitely something you should check out as well. It’s a solid follow-up to this record.

"There's been a lot of changes in my life over the past few months. The week before I recorded the vocals, we had a completely different record lyrically. Some things can change so quickly, when you least expect it. However, I think that's where this EP came from—honesty in the moment. In that week before I recorded vocals, I re-wrote 75% of the lyrics because the original ones were no longer relevant to my life. The past few months have been hard, but this band and this EP have kept me going. I hope these songs speak to you in some way. hope they help you as much as they've helped me."

Parkwood - "Selfish" (EP Review)

Parkwood is an alternative-emo band from Hammonton, New Jersey. The band’s first release was Solus in January of 2015, followed by a single, “Deathbed,” off of their most recent EP, Selfish. “Deathbed” is the fourth track on their most recent release, which I’ll be going over in this review. Parkwood consists of Jorge Estrada (vocals/guitar), Nick Moretti (vocals/bass), Nick Gelone (Drums), and Brandon Beckley (guitar). Selfish was recorded by Eric McNelis of Sleep Audio/The Gradwell House and was mastered by Dave at The Gradwell House as well. 

The first song on the EP is titled, “It Gets Old,” which seems to discuss the struggle of meeting expectations of loved ones and how draining it can be when you are consistently letting down the ones you love. The music is very heavy-hitting and emotional. It starts off at an almost dragging tempo, and later picks up the pace halfway through the song. I relate heavily to this song, and had the blessing to sing on a couple of tracks. The end lyrics, “I’m a lost boy and you’re better off alone, than to be with someone who’s a constant disappointment to everyone he knows,” really hit me hard because they are so relatable. 

The second song, “Home,” is my personal favorite, and the chorus is super catchy. This song discusses a very personal topic about the hardships of living in a “home” that you essentially feel uncomfortable in — like you aren’t yourself. You’ve become accustomed to something outside of yourself. When you try so hard to meet expectations of those around you — particularly, our elders — it becomes exhausting to consistently fail in their eyes. Jorge asked me to sing on this song and write something for the ending, so I wrote about a very low point in my life related to something he was similarly going through, where you just feel defeated and want to give up. 

“Heavy Daze” is the third track on the EP and musically one of my favorites. It opens up with just drums playing a very energetic beat. This song seems to continue the theme of being stuck inside your own head. Battling anxiety, depression, and just the general hardships of life is definitely overwhelming, and this song explores these struggles perfectly. 

The fourth song on the EP is their single, “Deathbed," and is beyond heavy-hitting. I love Nick’s vocals on this song. They combine very well with Jorge, and it portrays well with loads of energy and aggression. (Side note — I also love the choppy breakdown towards the 2 minute mark — peep it.) My favorite thing about this EP is the dynamic changes in tempo — in this song specifically. It combines genres and toys with emo and hardcore, which they pull off really well. 

The last song on the EP, is the self-titled track, “Selfish.” This song opens up with self-reflection on past mistakes and just generally being self-absorbed. A lot of the lyrics seem to be discussing a relationship between two people, and the indecisiveness of the relationship based on past and re-occurring mistakes. The last lyric states, “I’m sorry I’m leaving again,” followed by a change in pace instrumentally. The music is heavy-hitting and moving. It summarized the EP as a whole very well. I think there’s a lot happening musically to portray the feelings followed by that last line.

All in all, this is one of my favorite EP’s from around here, and I was very fortunate to be a part of this. Selfish is an emotional journey of self-reflection and awareness, and it’s definitely a feeler. If you’re looking to get a lil emo, and possibly aggressive, this EP is one you should listen to for sure. 

Aw Shucks - "Better Now" (EP Review)

Aw Shucks is an indie rock band from South Jersey and Delaware County. The band consists of Dylan Walker (vocals/guitar), (former member) Jarrett Wenzel (vocals/guitar), Jack Meidel (bass/production), and Chris Kearney (Drums/vocals). Their first EP is the “Better Now EP” which was released in October of 2017. This record was recorded by their bassist, Jack, and mixed by the band. Better Now was mastered by James Forbes (Fine Cut Studios), and the artwork was done by Austin Pettit. 

The record opens up with a song “Elizabeth Cranford,” which introduces Jarrett Wenzel and a hot clean guitar tone. This song is 5 minutes long, but doesn’t ever drag because it's packed with hooks, instrumentation, and tempo changes that keep you on the edge of your seat. The lyrical content of the song deals with going through a tough breakup with somebody you love and can’t help to still be in love, so naturally, it’s a super emotional song that still gives the listener a feeling of hopefulness with the way the music is portrayed. 

The second song, “Pawn,” switches over to an immediate head-bopping vibe. It also switches to their other vocalist, Dylan Walker. I really love how they incorporate their strengths as songwriters/singer and go back and forth on who’s singing on which songs. In my opinion, this is one of my favorite songs. There’s a beautiful change at the end of the song when Aw Shucks sings “is that how this ends, with you leaving me, useless and gone,” where they just go off. The rhythmic change is super tasteful after the entire song already being catchy. I also like the idea of extending the chorus of the song towards the end. 

The third track, “Swaying Flowers,” has one of my favorite instrumental hooks ever. The song opens with that which is essentially the chorus in my opinion. It’s subtly mathy and very tasteful. This is also the track where they say the EP’s title in the lyrics, so you know it’s gotta be a bop. This song seems to deal with the hardships of being stuck inside your own head, and not being content with where you are. 

The fourth song, “Backroads,” switches back to Jarrett being the primary singer, and he doesn’t fail to pull at my heartstrings again. This song seems to be discussing making the mistake of driving home drunk, and those irrational intoxicated feelings on top of dealing with personal mental health. A lot of the song is talking about wishing death amongst yourself, which seems to be an impulsive feeling when you’re at your lowest of lows. What I love about this song is the dynamics throughout -- especially the ending which says, “I have far too much in me to watch it end like this.” He changes the mood and mentality to something positive and optimistic regarding self-health. 

The fifth song, “Oh Sheesh” (by Aw Shucks — that shit made me laugh) seems to be dealing with putting up with somebody who is bringing negativity into your life; the idea of wasting your time on someone you should have never given your time to in the first place. I love this song’s instrumentation. There’s a lot happening dynamically and a lot of tasteful changes throughout the song. 

The last song on the record, “Signals,” is my personal favorite.V Dylan wrote a simple and melodically catchy song with an assortment of dynamics. The lyrics talk about the hardships of being in love in a struggling relationship. It combines memories, reminiscing, past, and future of moments with somebody who is held close to his heart. My favorite line is “...but I swam to the depths of the sea, ‘cause I know that you are safe with me. All I did was dream of what could be, but now I can barely fall asleep.” These lines are super relatable to something I’ve gone through personally, and I feel as though a lot of people have had their own similar situations themselves. What I love about this song is the way you can hear the emotion portrayed in the vocals. 

Overall, I think Better Now was an absolutely amazing and impressive record to introduce themselves to the world. I really hope this band gets the recognition they deserve sooner rather than later, because this is not a band to sleep on. On top of that, they are all wonderful musicians as well as people. If you haven’t gotten the chance to, I strongly suggest you get out to a show and try to catch these guys live. The record is recorded beautifully, but I think they portray themselves even better live.

chill/hilarious - "21&colder" (EP Review)

Chill/hilarious is a 2-piece indie band from Cherry Hill, New Jersey.  The band consists of Zayna Youssef and Jack Meidel.  They are a DIY band who recorded their own music.  Zayna plays drums and sings, while Jack is on guitar and making the band's recordings possible.  chill/hilarious’s bio is: “she plays, he plays, she sings,” which pretty much wraps up their two-piece vibe perfectly.

Their most recent release, “21&colder” was recorded by their guitarist, Jack Meidel, and Chris Kearney, who is in Jack's other emo-band from NJ, Aw Shucks.  21&colder was recorded at PKD studio in Springfield, PA.

The first song on the EP is titled “Make Leaf,” which opens with a solid jam for the first minute or so of the song.  It introduces their heavier, more dynamic aspect of the instrumentation.  When the vocals came in, it immediately brought the dynamic level down to an intimacy with their vocalist, Zayna.  My favorite line in this song was “Yeah, I know you’re showing off, that's kinda- lame.”  I love the musical breaks of stops in this song, and this part left only the “lame” to be heard in the vocals which really caught my attention before ending with another instrumental jam at the end.  Definitely a great short and sweet start to the EP. 

The second song, “Greengrass,” immediately opens up with a lot of energy and a great hook.  A minute or so into the song, they bring the dynamics down again and make the vocals super prominent and intimate again.  I feel as though this song is talking about striving for change and just an all-around self-perspective.  I really like how they continue to reintroduce the instrumental breaks and jam endings. 

The third song is titled, “Ice Water,” and the vocal melodies in this song really reminded me of Anthony Green almost mixed with Title Fight which is super interesting and catches your ear for sure.  This is another short track that holds a lot of emotions. 

The record closes with “The Outcome” which is definitely one of my personal favorites.  The lyrics are very genuine and the music is simply catchy.  I believe the lyrics in this song deal with holding in something that is true to you without question -- that other people or society around you makes you feel wrong for.  The line “caught in a lie that I can’t help this time, why should I?” is super powerful.  I love how this song makes you feel hopeful and almost joyful.  It’s an awesome feeling to step out of your shell, and this song portrays that perfectly. 

Overall, this record is powerful and pure.  It’s short, and leaves you wanting more, which is an awesome thing to be able to do for the listener.  There’s a lot of talent that goes into this 2-piece, and I strongly advise you check them out. 

If you’re looking for a place to start, the intro song, “Make Leaf,” is great, and “The Outcome” is my personal favorite. 

Kay Roman - "Teen Angst" (EP Review)

Kay Roman is a singer/songwriter based out of Oakland, New Jersey.  Her most recent EP is titled Teen Angst which was released in September of 2017.  Kay wrote the whole EP herself, and it was mixed and mastered by Joey Papa.  The record opens with a short, but catchy song titled “Mordecai” which introduces a minor-mood for the record.  The song gradually layers more vocals and synth instrumentation as the “Mordecai, Mordecai” hook loops around.  I love the way this song closes with an almost eerie noise after saying “I’m so insane, it’s not enough.”

The second song on the record, “Go Away," immediately switches the mood up with a happy-sounding progression and horns opening up the song.  The chorus of this song is genuinely awesome.  It’s simple and catchy and states “Go away, go away, I don’t need you here to mess with my heart today” with a beautiful melody.  This one put me in my feels in the most uplifting way if that makes sense.

The third track on the record is called “See You in the Halls” and opens up with a line that says “went to the store and bought a GameCube controller” which immediately intrigued me!  Turns out this song is another one that pulls at the heartstrings.  The intro gives me a Julien Baker-vibe, and when it picks up the music reminds me of Tigers Jaw and The Hotelier, for a few comparisons.  I really love the structure and dynamics of this song specifically.  It’s one of the longer tracks but you don’t notice because there’s constant change in a seamless way.

The fourth song on the record is called “201” which brings back the singular acoustic guitar and vocals while sneaking in some melodramatic cello.  I really like that the vocals follow the guitar melody in this song.  There are also some very interesting chord choices in the transitions of this song that are super tasteful.  This track seems to be talking about an old place that she used to call home but can no longer bring herself to do so.  This is definitely another feeler. 

“Give Me Attention” is the 5th track on this EP.  The instrumental in the chorus of this song immediately reminded me of Tigers Jaw's self-titled EP.  This is another track of dealing with the idea of “insanity” which is something that’s a common theme in a lot of people’s lives that is tough to speak up about.  So far, Teen Angst is a record that talks about a lot of hardships that are difficult to talk about through simply speaking, but this EP takes those situations and turns them into something moving and relatable that you can always move your head to. 

The record closes with a track titled “Blue Jay.”  This is another emotional journey that’s done beautifully.  It’s super soft for the majority of the song, but when the full band comes in around 3 quarters into the song, you just feel.  There aren’t any more lyrics after that point in the song, and there doesn’t have to be.  I think this song ended the record perfectly. 

Overall, I was thoroughly moved by this record.  I believe it talks about a lot of issues we can relate to.  Even if it’s on a broad spectrum, and we of course don’t know the stories behind these songs, there’s something there that I can grasp onto personally.  A lot of people say you should listen to happy music when you’re sad, but I lean more towards records like this one. It has a perfect combination of music that’s uplifting and almost joyful, and lyrics that may break your heart and hit home. 

My personal favorite song was “Go Away” from Kay Roman's Teen Angst if you’re looking for somewhere to start. 

Regrown - "Out of the Picture" (EP Review)

Out of the Picture is an EP by regrown from Voorhees Township, NJ.  The band consists of guitarist/vocalist Ben Greenblatt, guitarist/vocalist Kyle Lloyd, bassist Chris Panto, and drummer Jake Morrell.  The EP was recorded by Peter Delbuono and released January 4th, 2018.  Regrown is an emo rock band, and their music shines in this genre; especially when you see them live.  The record, Out of the Picture, opens with the intro track, “Woofus,” which sets the mood perfectly.  It’s a simply catchy 6/8 jammer.  The lyrics are vague, yet relatable, which grabs my attention.  It ends with “I don’t want to feel like this… I’ll never win” and immediately transitions into the record's title track, “Out of the Picture.”  This song, in particular, gives me “Sasha” by Turnover kind-of-vibes -- that general era of music.  The theme seems to focus on losing the connection with someone who is very important to you and struggling to cope. They end the song with “I hope you’re okay” multiple times and close off with “cause I’m not okay,” which is a beautiful selfless lyric. 

The third song, “February, or How,” brings back that 6/8 rock-n-roll kind of energy.  The song seems to focus on falling out of love and how messy that can be, as well as the hardships of making mistakes and accepting them.  This is another simple, and catchy, song that’s very easy to listen to.  Later on in the song, the energy picks up and changes to a 4/4 fast-paced closing after repeating, “I won’t say I miss you…I swear to god I once loved you,” which is a very raw and honest lyric. 

The closing song on the record, “Chuck Coleman Sesh Interruption,” gets a bit more aggressive and energetic.  This song is one of my personal favorites.  The music itself reminds me of “Young States” by Citizen.  I believe this song continues the theme of coping with a break-up and how badly that can toy with your emotions.  The ending of this song features a music almost-breakdown, which closes out the record perfectly.

Overall, regrown is a very energetic band that I’d highly recommend seeing live.  Their combinations of singers mesh very well and create beautiful melodic hooks while holding very high energy.  I’m very excited to watch this band grow and keep on creating genuine songs.

Space Cadets - "Coming Along Slowly" (EP Review)

Coming Along Slowly is an EP by the South Jersey band Space Cadets.  They are a two-piece emo/math rock band from Mount Holly, NJ, featuring vocalist/drummer Jarrett Wenzel and guitarist Matt Trinkle.  The album starts with luscious and melodic guitars in the first track, “Angel.” Jarrett Wenzel pulls at the heartstrings with this song that seems to be talking about believing in a relationship between two human beings.  Although going through hardships, he says, “But you’re the sweetest, kindest, most perfect human being,” which really hit me personally.  The song ends with “I hope you believe in me” with the softest vocals and all the music cutting out at the end. 

The soft clean tones and horns continue in the second song, “Slowly,” which features South Jersey band Regrown (Kyle Lloyd & Ben Greenblatt).  The song is very melodic and beautiful.  It ends with Regrown featuring on the emotional outro, “I’m sorry I put you through this, I just want to be forgiven.” 

The third song, “DIY Machine Broke,” really hits home for me.  The song discusses the hardship of being a musician as well as a human being.  To me, they’re trying to say that we are all human; we make mistakes.  Yet, the anxiety of being a disappointment in someone else’s life can sometimes overwhelm you easily.  At the end of the day, at least they’re doing what they love -- creating art and music.

Moving onto the fourth song, “Committing” (which features Luke Knoblauch from South Jersey), they continue the theme of the hardships of life becoming overwhelming.  They close the song with, “Can’t be an excuse, fix the problem at the room, let’s all agree to do the things we said we’d always do,” which seems to imply connection amongst community to make everybody feel a little more at peace.

The record closes with the song “Balcony.”  Like the rest of the record, this one is just as emotional and discusses the fear of losing loved ones.  I really love the percussive hip-hop samples on top of the tasteful jazz cords and emotional melodies.  They also include some very beautiful intervals in their “ooo’s” while reintroducing the horns to close off the record. 

I’ll be honest, this EP left me wanting more from the band, which in my opinion is exactly what an artist should aim to achieve.  I really enjoyed the overall consistency of the theme of the record.  I believe a sense of community amongst your peers and working as a team will always get you further towards happiness and further in life in general.  According to their Bandcamp, they planned to record a full-length prior to their summer tour, however, they realized they wanted to put something out before touring and created this EP almost spontaneously.  See what the vocalist, Jarrett Wenzel said about the record, below:

“A little while ago, I got an idea for what has become our newest EP.  Earlier this year we had been writing songs for a full-length and planning our summer tour.  Around April, we realized it had been a year since we put anything out, and that our summer run wouldn’t be in support of new music.  So my idea was to write and record an EP with little-to-no preparation.  We had about 4-6 weeks to write the songs and coordinate things with the featured musicians, but most of the writing was done in the two weeks prior to the dates.

I brought everyone (aside from Matt) into the studio without parts written or without knowing exactly what was going to happen.  We never got together beforehand.  There was so much room for failure but not once did I feel like it was a bad idea.  I just believed in it wholeheartedly.  I didn’t explain this more than briefly to anyone, I just kind of did it and made sense of the process along the way.  I am so proud of what happened.  I can’t thank my wonderful friends enough for lending me their time and patience throughout the recording process.  I certainly could never thank them enough for being in my life.  I would like to think that all of this is a metaphor for believing in yourself/your peers and being completely blown away by the outcome -- but who knows, maybe I’m just a sap and our EP sucks!  In all seriousness though, have some faith, my friends.  You just might surprise yourself."

Atlas Booking is a fairly new booking agency, founded in 2016, looking to help bands and artists book local shows based out of Cinnaminson, NJ.  Consisting of Tom Hale, Andrew Worelle, and Kevin Dunne, this booking trio recently teamed up with Grandaire Booking, making them the newest addition to the Grandaire team, helping South Jersey show after show.  This show will be one of their first official shows as “Atlas Booking” in 2017, and it will be held at one of South Jersey’s most well known local venues: Studio Luloo.

Atlas back, back again, tell a muh fuh kin friend.  Atlas Booking is really excited to announce their first show of 2017, and you bet your ass we’re gonna bump “Poppin’ Champagne” by All Time Low the entire show.  Yo, it’s all ages though, so pop sparkling cider like a respectable human being.  The gig is on Saturday, April 8th, 2017, and doors are at 6:00pm. There’s only 5 bands so make sure you get there early -- it’s a stacked show with some of the best bands (and the best people) in the tri-state area.  They’re making moves and you don’t want to miss this show.  Luloo kind of looks like your little sister's bedroom, so you can basically say “Oh, I saw *insert band name here* in this bedroom lookin' ass venue before they got big.” *insert nail emoji* - Basically if you go, you’re getting hella punk cred like you got pepper sprayed at a Trump rally.  My friend Tim had that happen to him, and he has also has gotten robbed; so I feel like those two combined give him a lot of punk cred.  Be like Tim.  Get that punk cred, brother.

I mean, Drake wants you to come.  Like damn, look how strangely happy Drake is for you to get to this gig.  Of all people to disappoint, it shouldn’t be Drake.  Drake doesn't like disappointment, he likes Happiness.

Definitely go to that pizza shop.  They’re so cheap and so good.  They also have a deal for a slice and a can of soda for $2, so get there before the first band, and use that extra 2 dollars you’d be spending if you came after the first band.  It’s like free pizza and drank.

The Sandbox is a new South Jersey D.I.Y. venue hosted for good people looking to have good times.  This venue hasn’t released their address to the public yet, but if you’d like to attend this show (which I highly suggest because the touring bands are incredible), all you have to do is message for the address, via Facebook or through Allison or Caitlyn Cornish.

Both Allison and Caitlyn have been consistently involved in the music scene for a good amount of time, and they decided to take it upon themselves to put on even more loaded shows in the Mays Landing area.  They’re power-duo sisters booking through the name “Cornucopia Booking.”

For this show, we’re lucky enough to get the first experience of The Sandbox.  I don’t know if there’s going to be real sand or not, but you bet your ass I’m bringing a shovel or something.  Maybe I’ll make myself into a mermaid.  Like a sand one, I mean.  I don’t know.

Anyway.  This show will be on Friday, March 31st, 2017.  Doors are at 5:00pm, and it’s $7 to get in because it’s a stacked line up filled with a number of touring bands from all over the place.  Bay Faction and Arrowhead are two bands from Mass. that you do not want to sleep on.

“FLEMINGTON DIY (Do It Yourself) is an organization whose mission is to inspire social change by fostering and cultivating projects that connect the local community with musicians and artists in Flemington.”  Flemington DIY is a non-profit organization dedicated to the arts in all forms. Besides serving as a creative art space, hosting poetry nights, film viewings, cultural meetings, etc., this space is known as the center music hub for the area.  They have hosted a number of up and coming bands previously such as Petal, Dowsing, Jank, Spencer Radcliff, and many more.

For this show, it’s simple. You’ll be kick flippin’, feelin’ so good like you’re Tony Hawk.  Plus, there’s a band from Ohio that will shred the musical gnar, Harvey Pekar.  The show is on March 30th, 2017 – 6 pm – 90 Main St, Flemington, NJ 08822.

Little House Booking is a booking company based out of South Jersey that started in 2011 and has built its name and staff greatly since.  They offer a number of services, on top of shows.  It’s “For the bands.  For the fans.  For the Music.”

“Little House started off as a non-existent booking company back in June of 2011 hosting a Birthday show at the Wolfhouse (which is where "Little House" comes from, see the significance? no?... we don't neither), in Mullica, NJ with 6 great local bands, and one great out of state band. Since then, we have taken a more serious approach and are branching out towards all areas of South Jersey.

We are diverse, which means we cater to ALL GENRES. Some shows will be 18+, some will be 21+, some may even be all ages. Make sure you refer to our event pages for further details on each individual show. If you are a photographer/promoter/press-related, please be sure to contact us to get on our guest list for any upcoming shows, otherwise you will be required to pay the cover charge at the door.

If you would like to team up and help book a show with us, let us know! We don't mind helping others out, as this is not considered a "JOB" for us, but more like a passion. We strongly support the local music scene as well as the local promoters and we do not mind sponsoring or helping out with other shows.

Hit The Pit airs every Wednesday night at 8pm ONLY on Toxic Radio.

LHB hosts events at a number of places such as Boneyard Bar & Grill in Atlantic City, The Watering Hole in Mays Landing, ICAC Hall in Gloucester City, and Championship Bar in Trenton to name of few.

This Birthday Bash will be held on March 25th, 2017.  Doors are 6:00pm, and it’s $10 to get in.  There’s gonna be a lot of uncensored heavy ass music with loud amps, and heavy hitting drums; probably a lot of double bass, so be there.  There’s 8 bands, with one secret set.  OOOooOO, you don’t want to miss that hot fire, am I right?

The Watering Hole is a Mom and Pop bar and restaurant located in Mays Landing, NJ.  They serve multi-cuisine lunch, dinner, and drinks.

“Welcome to the Watering Hole Café, a South Jersey icon with a colorful history.  It is a fantastic place with an unpretentious attitude, great food and great music, where all are welcome.  Set on 12 acres of NJ Pinelands with an outstanding outside appeal, the Watering Hole Café is the latest name of this legendary establishment.

Early in The I900s, it was said to be a stagecoach stop.  People would come, pick up some supplies, eat some food and quench their thirst.  During prohibition, runners from Philadelphia would stop here on their way to Atlantic City (and maybe have a beer or two).

Dating back to the mid 50’s, Doaks was its name, with turkey shoots on the weekends, a truck horn on the roof to blow when cars drove by and entertaining clothes hanging from the ceiling.  Afterwards, it became the Country Pine Inn, which for the most part was a family restaurant serving hearty meals.  Next, it was Uncle Mike’s in the early nineties, which was a fabulous destination for motorcyclists because of the scenic stretch of road leading here.

So after a hundred years, we’re not much different from the Weymouth Furnace (located just north of us) having aged while remaining the same.  We are a local standby as well as home to a stranger, new comer or tourist, where all walks of life are always welcome warmly.

We hope you enjoy the music, your meal, a drink, your day, a game or anything else while visiting us and hope you will return real soon.

Boontunes is a live music venue in Boonton, NJ.

They figured out a very punny name for a sweet venue.  They host live band, records, and events.  They showcase their local music and art community, consistently bringing artists and musicians alike for a strong sense of community.  Boontunes opened their doors on July 4th, 2015.  Did they do it for America?  Maybe.  I do love Eagles.  Owner Justin Di Ricco, and his “sidekick” Tabitha Booth, are both musicians themselves aiming to “create a space that is comfortable and fun for all.”

This show was organized by my mans in Glume.  I got the honor of playing a few shows with them at Flemington DIY, and they were definitely added to my personal list of “mans.”  They’re great dudes, and their music is awesome; shout out to them for constantly putting on and playing shows for the people.  I’m glad you’re giving them what they want.  Rawr xD :3 <3 c: brother.

Also, the greatest part of this entire show, is that my other mans Polo (Pocholo Itona), who takes incredible pictures by the way, is playing 3 of the 4 sets this night.  He’ll be playing with Glume, of course, Liam Reyes, AND Moon Pie!  Watch this dude kill the entire game in one night and then sleep on stage directly after.  It’s gonna be wild.  *Come thru by Drake slowly starts to fade in in the distance*

Boontunes is a live music venue in Boonton, NJ.

Although this show will be thrown at Boontunes, it was organized by the band Green Knuckle Material (GKM).  Boontunes already started off strong with the Pun game, but GKM may have just surpassed them.

Canadian’s rule.  Plus I heard they say “eh” a lot of things, which makes them even rule-ier.

Emerson Booking is a D.I.Y. booking agency based out of New Jersey that hosts lots of local shows for up-and-coming bands and artists.  Their agency is one of the branches under Grandaire Booking, which is one of South Jersey’s most well-known booking companies that helps give local bands a home.

“In September of 2014 Emerson Booking hosted our first show at the Grand Formage in Atlantic City.  After just a few months of paying our dues to the local music scene, building connections with South Jersey Bands, and getting involved with our local hometown leaders we were able to create a new pocket of the music community based out of Mays Landing, NJ.“

For this show, the boys in Pines are starting their spring tour in Mays Landing at The Watering Hole.  Come hang and kick off their tour right before sending them on the road, you feel?  This show will be on Friday, March 17th, 2017 starting at 6pm.  It’s $5 at the door before the first band, and $7 after, so save that 2 bucks for some quality Taco Bell and support ya music makers.
