MONTCLAIR, N. J. -- Outpost in the Burbs presents “Spero Plays Nyro” by the Christine Spero group, an evening of music by the legendary songwriter Laura Nyro, on Friday, February 10th, 2017 at 8 p.m.  This concert will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 67 Church Street.

In this heartfelt and moving tribute to Laura Nyro, one of the greatest and most covered songwriters of the 20th century, pianist and singer Christine Spero and her group take the listener on an unforgettable journey through some of Laura’s most memorable songs.  The show and new Cd, “Spero Plays Nyro” remind us that Laura’s music is poignant and timeless.  The arrangements are hip, the vocals are beautiful, the musicianship is stellar. The exquisite arrangements are true to Laura’s originals but with many sweet creative touches, beautifully interpreted in the group’s own distinct style.  Christine has fully recaptured Laura’s spirit and passion with beautiful renditions running the breadth and depth of Laura's emotions.  Christine has loved Laura's music from a young age when she was given Eli and the Thirteenth Confession by a radio DJ friend.  She was inspired by Laura's music to be bold in writing, singing, and playing piano.  Laura Nyro was the quintessential singer/songwriter and pianist whose groundbreaking music crossed the genres of folk, rock, and jazz.  She became one of the most covered artists in the 1960's and 1970's with such songs as “Eli's Coming,” “Stoned Soul Picnic,” “And When I Die” and “Wedding Bell Blues.”  Her tragically premature passing in 1997 shocked her fans and in 2012 she was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.

Drummer Peter O'Brien and bassist Scott Petito create a rhythm section that keeps the music driving and steady but never imposing.  Saxophonist/percussionist, Elliot Spero, adds excellent sax solos, flutes and multiple percussion accents.  The group has performed at many Festivals, Performing arts centers, Dinner theaters, clubs and private events.

Chalk Zone is a DIY living room venue located in Cape May, New Jersey.  If you’re looking for a place to drink beer, listen to tight ass music, and possibly pet a dog, this is your place.  It may be a DIY house venue, but the reviews on Facebook are better than 95% of your town's local business’s Yelp reviews.  I mean, they have entire walls that you can draw on with chalk.  It’s 2017. It’s revolutionary.  It's freakin' Chalk Zone, brother.

For this show, Chalk Zone will be hosting 2 New Jersey bands, as well as Krelboyne, from Illinois, and The New Harmony, from Delaware.  The gig is on Friday, February 10th, 2017, and doors are at 7:00pm.  There’s 4 bands, two of which I know are the NJ OG homies.  Forever Losing Sleep is constantly blowing me away with their #tone and how often they tour, and Clearview are the local scene brothers from around my area (Hammonton // South Jersey).

Bike Routes is the moniker of local acoustic artist David Osterhout.  Bike Routes has a show or two under it’s belt as a full band, but all recorded music is acoustic.  For fans of Pinegrove and tall, lanky people that wear 2XL hardcore band tees.

Rich People is a 4-piece Alternative / Emo outfit fronted by Rob Rich.  Rich People put out their debut release Jacob’s Ladder in November 2015.  Since then, Rich People have toured and played a few large local shows and festivals.

The Room at Harper’s Pub is a performance venue located at 1 Gibbsboro Road in Clementon, NJ.  Their slogan is “RAN BY ARTISTS FOR ARTISTS.”

"Harper's Pub created The Room at Harper's to be a place for musicians, ran by musicians. The goal is for everyone to have a good time; fans, bands, family and friends. Hosting all kinds of original music from local, regional and national bands."

For this show, The Room will be hosting a Split Release for my mans in Space Cadets and Burned Out Still Glowing, along with a number of other local bands I would also consider “my mans.”  The gig is on Saturday, February 4th, 2017, and doors are at 6:00pm.  There’s 6 bands for a crisp 5 dollar bill.  That’s some Walmart savings right there, brother.  Buy 5 bands, get one free.  You can’t beat that.  This show is going to be turnt.  Everyone knows.

“FLEMINGTON DIY (Do It Yourself) is an organization whose mission is to inspire social change by fostering and cultivating projects that connect the local community with musicians and artists in Flemington.”  Flemington DIY is a non-profit organization dedicated to the arts in all forms.  Besides serving as a creative art space, hosting poetry nights, film viewings, cultural meetings, etc., this space is known as the center music hub for the area.  They have hosted a number of up and coming bands previously such as Petal, Dowsing, Jank, Spencer Radcliff, and many more.

For this show, the art space will be hosting mostly New Jersey bands, as well as Johnny Mays a.k.a. WATERMEDOWN from Georgia.  The gig is on Friday, February 3rd, 2017, and doors are at 6:00pm.  There are 5 bands, on top of watermedown, so make sure you get there early.  It’s a stacked show with some of the best bands (and the best people) in the tri-state area.  They’re making moves, and you don’t want to miss this show.

This show is very special because watermedown is finally releasing new music after his initial release of Somewhere Sleepless in 2015, which you can listen to via Spotify below:

A Huge Rousing Success - 2017 Blues in The Loft at SOPAC Hat City Kitchen Contest

There are several Blues Music Jams running throughout the Northern NJ area that folks come out to on a regular basis, listen to local area artists or play with the local musicians, and have loads of fun.  Late last year, one jam decided to give the participants of the Blues Jam a little bit of anxiety, and the audience a boatload of fun.  Mike Griot of PWI Promotions and Entertainment decided he did not want a battle of the bands, but he did want to give the local Blues Talent that showed up and jam every week a way to gain more exposure and a bigger payday.  Mike expressed his sentiments this way:

“It is with great anticipation that I announce yet another opportunity for many of you to express yourself to an even wider audience.  Although SOPAC and BLUES IN THE LOFT have been established for many years, it is and continues to be my charge to create new venues, new collaborations and new opportunities for emerging performers to express their artistic voices to as large an audience as possible.  It is also an added bonus to be able to offer a select performer a future paid performance opportunity as a result of their hard work and dedication to their craft... believe me: I UNDERSTAND.” - Mike Griot

Not wanting a regular battle of the bands, Mike Griot, who is also Executive Director of Valley Arts PACArts, seized on the idea of a Live Blues Jam Contest.  Working the idea into a long running Blues Jam, he collaborated with the Al Gold Sunday Afternoon Blues Jam, running 7 years, twice a month, every other Sunday at Hat City Kitchen.

The concept that came out of the collaboration was as Mike stated: “The format is simple: attend the jams... express your interest in the SOPAC event to Al (Gold), sit-in solo (or with a mate) with the house band.”

So, have the JAM participants show up and play with the Hat City Kitchen house band demonstrating what they can do in the impromptu setting of the jam. 

Over 8 different Sundays from October through December, jammers came from as far as South Jersey and from many different parts of Northern New Jersey and New York.

It was an exciting contest as some jammers are not used to competition whereas others immediately jumped on to the role of being a contestant.  This was made harder as the goal of each week during the selection process was to keep the normal jam going, keep the judges hidden, and the structure of the jam the same.  What did change was the quantity of jammers, the quality of the jammers’ performance and the variety of jammers.  Over the selection timeframe, musicians and vocalists showed up from 8 to 80.  The jams ran longer by an hour and half, yet folks stayed and had loads of fun.  Eventually the final number of contestants were selected, given the news, and off to the final contest venue they went.

The Big Day is Here – SOPAC Blues in the Loft Contest

On January 15, 2017, the contest was held in the lofts of the beautiful South Orange Performing Arts Center located in downtown South Orange, NJ.  Widely promoted, folks and celebrities came out in full force to enjoy the festivities.

And in keeping with the theme of a regular jam, this event was hosted by Mike Griot and the regular weekly jam host, Al Gold, along with the Hat City Kitchen House band consisting of: Jerry Cordasco - Drums, Tom Rice - Guitar, Mark Pavlica – Bass, and B3 Billy Baker – Keys, and Al Gold on vocals.

In keeping with the theme, the cuisine served was supplied Hat City Kitchen restaurant.  Even more in keeping with the “keep it real theme” was the fact that the restaurant brought in the regular serving staff which made the event even more fun, as these guys did a great job.

The SOPAC Blues In the Loft Contest is On

Well, after the many weeks of competition, contestant selection and getting the details ready, the stage was set and the night’s festivities and competition was underway.

It’s All About That Bass - Unveiling Earl May’s 165-Year-Old Bass

An extremely sweet opening act of the night was the unveiling of the Bass by the Host and Bass Man himself, Mike Griot, accompanied by Al Gold.

History was made with the unveiling of the 165-year-old Bass formerly played by Earl May (1927 – 2008).  Earl May, who studied under Charles Mingus, was one of the most prodigious and prolific bassists of the postwar era, lending his rich, round sound to sessions headlined by jazz icons John Coltrane, Chet Baker, Dizzy Gillespie, Junior Mance, Barry Harris, Gloria Lynne and many more.  What made this segment even sweeter was that the host Mike Griot played the Bass, supported by the Jam host Al Gold.

Even nicer was the fact that Earl May’s wife, Lee Boz May (black dress) was in the audience and beaming, as she could keep her wish to Earl which was to keep the music alive.   

Meanwhile Contestants Were Ready

Finally, it was time for the contestants.  They came in to cheers and applause as they waited their turn to perform.  The contestants had a chance to perform a song they knew, and then in the second act, they had to perform a song based on a genre and a theme that they learned minutes before they took to the stage.  The contestants performed several tunes, sang and played their hearts out, and the audience loved it.

One of the other nice acts during the night, was that during the selection stage there were loads of contestants so a small part of the night was dedicated to a few selected guitarists who came up and performed with the HKC House Band.  It was another fun highlight of the night as each guitarist did their solos, and folks enjoyed the segment tremendously.

There Can Only Be One…

After some truly outstanding performances by all contestants, it is, as the saying goes, “there can only be one.”  The judges tallied their scores and a winner was identified.  The winner, a crowd favorite, is one Vin Mott of Vin Mott's Rhythm & Blues Band.  He played some serious harmonica blues and sang some soulful tunes.  It was truly a great performance and a well-deserved award.

The Local Celebrity Audience was Awesome

A big part of a night like this is the audience, as it is and should be, all blues jams.  They come, they mingle, they dance, they meet their favorite performers and they cheer on their favorites all night long.

MONTCLAIR, N. J. -- Outpost in the Burbs presents celebrated singer-songwriter and independent artist, Joe Purdy (LA), on Saturday, February 4th, 2017 at 8 p.m.  Opening the show will be Garrison Starr (LA).  This concert will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 67 Church Street.

Arkansas-born, Los Angeles-based artist Joe Purdy has releasing music through his label Mudtown Crier Records.  Purdy sold a staggering one million direct track downloads in the United States on iTunes.  His latest album, This American, is rich with haunting imagery and filled with warm, American folklore and storytelling.  Purdy has had many of his songs used in television, film, and commercials, including the song “Wash Away” which was chosen by J. J. Abrams for the third episode of the hit TV show Lost in its first season.

Singer-songwriter Garrison Starr will open the show. Originally from Mississippi, she is now based in Los Angeles.  All proceeds from her recent single, “Put Your Weapon Down,” support the National Center for Victims of Crime to benefit the victims of the Orlando tragedy.

Coffee Works Too: After Hours Music Series

Coffee Works Too is overly pleased to announce and introduce the newest addition to their agendas: Coffee Works Too: After Hours Showcases! 

Coffee Works Too - Brewed From the Heart is a locally owned Coffee Shop located in Voorhees, New Jersey.  Coffee Works Too is an innovative coffee roaster and internet cafe that has been a focal point in the southern New Jersey region since 1998.  They offer the stimulating effects of coffee and tea and a large variety of food options and baked goods, served in a relaxed comfortable atmosphere.  But, not only is it JUST your local coffee shop, Coffee Works has different, unique, and exciting events happening almost every night.  There is an open mic night as well as karaoke night held once a week, along with wine nights, and performances from local artist of all varieties.

Coffee Works After Hours is a series of musical performances happening very frequently on both Thursdays and Fridays.  The lineups will consist of three to five full band lineups: yes! full bands!  Admission for these events will be $5 at the door, and the showcases will begin at 8pm.  The wonderful staff at Coffee Works will still be providing coffee, tea, and speciality beverages throughout the events, but the grill will not be open.  All of these events are BYOB. 

These showcases are sure to appeal to those of all ages and all music preferences: There is most definitely something for anyone to enjoy!!  Your favorite coffee shop transforms into an intimate music venue for local and touring artists.

Coffee Works: After Hours Debut showcases are taking place this Thursday and Friday, January 26th and 27th. 

Thursday’s lineup: Without Lime, 4:44, and Native Riff. 

Friday’s lineup: Breaking Tradition, Rachel, Bike Routes, Parkwood, and Pines.
