I am “Jack WD” as my stage name, but often at times I am also called “TheWrestlingDrummer.” My reason for my name to be “Jack WD” is because Jack is my real life first name and WD means “Wrestling Drummer”, which are the two things that I was known for doing during my high school days. Saying the words “wrestling” or “drummer” to any Lakewood kid, I’m most likely the first name that would come to mind.
I am a fairly new rapper in the game who is hungry to get up to the big time and is willing to do whatever it takes to get up there. I am also one of the more unique rappers entering the game because of my primary formula of combining heavy metal instrumentals with fast paced rapping. I can be experimental and versatile as well, as I do contribute my tastes and elements to other rap genres such as boom bap, speed rap, trap metal, emo rap and horrorcore. I love to surprise my listeners with the different tastes that I bring to the table.
I’ve been so big into music as far as six-years-old, when I would always turn on the television to watch rock artists like Green Day, All American Rejects, My Chemical Romance, Weezer, Gorillaz and many other rock artists. I’ve always dreamt of becoming a member of a rock band. Then when I was in the fifth grade, I discovered the genre of heavy metal when I turned on the television to find metal artists like Slipknot and Five Finger Death Punch on No. 1 Countdown on Fuse, which contribute heavily to my taste in music today as the head-banging pace of songs like “Psychosocial” and “Never Enough” are what still appeals me to this day. That same show also helped me discover the rap group Hollywood Undead, which became a pivotal band in my life a few years later.
I never started writing raps until eighth grade when not only I started getting all A’s in my classes (the entire year), but also I discovered more of Hollywood Undead’s music to the point where I became motivated to start writing my own raps, not to mention that Hollywood Undead kept their rap style simple and still sounded great. Hollywood Undead’s rap style was simple enough for me to take influence and I secretly wrote a bunch of raps (that I still have the handwritten sheets in a binder to this day) to develop my writing skill. I only wrote raps for a year then I stopped so I could focus more on my academics and extracurricular activities in school.
I never got in touch with any rappers or producers during my school days because no one knew that I wrote raps and the fear of competition, as my school did have a fair share of other rappers and producers. I was never the kind that would rap in front of anyone, as I was a very shy and quiet, heavy metal-loving, academic-focused kid of very few words during my time. I was often viewed as someone who lacked a voice to speak up or anything but did have that handful of friends that I shared vibes with and knew a lot about me.
After years of hiding and writing the most I could at any given time, it wasn't until I was cutting close to twenty-one-years-old when I contacted one of my friends, Gio, who had a microphone and software beforehand so we could finally make songs. He had a few friends record a cypher and when I heard it, it lit a huge wake-up call in me that made me ask myself “what am I doing with my life?” I need to get some music out there. I recorded my first few tracks and that’s when I realized that I had to harvest all of my energy into rapping.
It wasn't until August 2019, which was actually the first time I got in front of people to rap, starting at Ohmies Write or Die open mic in Roselle, NJ. Coming out to open mics is becoming an addiction to me as I constantly want to perform so I can overcome my shyness and start proving myself as the rapper that I am. I traveled out to a lot of open mics and met a lot of great people who do support one another. These open mics also make great practice in strengthening my second skin that allows me to express myself as I constantly perform and bring content out there.
As I was getting into rap music more and more, I was discovering a lot of other rappers’ music like Eminem, Token, Zillakami, KAAN, Tech N9ne, Twiztid, Lo Key and a lot of others. My obsession of metal music has lead me to combine my (improved) rap style from my influences to experiment rapping over the instrumentals of some of my favorite metal artists like Korn and Avenged Sevenfold. Combining the metal instrumentals with my rap style has creating my desired blend that I hope to continuously improve.
I want to popularize my rap metal formula as well my phantom mask imagery and genre versatility. I’m hoping I can actually make more than enough money for my parents to retire and live peacefully while earning my revenue and entertaining the world with my music. Music has been more than just a staple in my life, and I want to make a fortunate living out of my content.
If you want to pursue a desire or a dream, just know that god made you to be unstoppable and the prize will be waiting for you.
