Take Up Your Space SIS (Event Recap)
I met Krista B. through media. My sister Letty was producing a Black Women in Media blogger panel in 2015 for a brand called Daze Summit. I was on the panel representing my blog at the time, Masconsumption, and she was representing the blog Brooklyn Social.
On the panel, someone mentioned wrestling, and me and her eyes lit up. It is not often that you meet another black girl your age that loves wrestling as much as I do. About year later, I became an editor of a digital wellness magazine and needed to hire writers. It meant a lot to me to be able to provide my friends with opportunities. So Krista B. was the first person I hired as a freelance writer.
Soon, we were linking up for work but would talk about wrestling the entire time. It was 2017/18 and at this time the women in WWE were really breaking ground, and it was the most exciting thing for us. To the point where were like, okay, if we are going to get together and talk women’s wrestling for hours, we might as well start a podcast or blog.
And here we are, almost 4 years later, Krista B. and I have been going strong as Those Wrestling Girls brand. We provide a podcast show, events, and fan community. However, this has not stopped our grind in this media business.
We are taking up our space, sis.
In addition to TWG, Krista B. is also a media producer for WBLS, Hot 97, and also has a brand, Unapologetically Eclectic, an entertainment blog, and also produces a brunch panel called Take Up Your Space SIS.
The 2nd annual was last month at The Lion’s Den rooftop in the Coney Island area of Brooklyn. Krista B. hosted a panel of women who shared their personal and professional journeys that allowed them to take up their space.
As black women, especially in media and other industries that are dominated by white men, we tend to shrink ourselves or are apologetic about who we are and what we mean to do. But we as black women refuse to do this any longer, we are going to be unapologetic about TAKING UP OUR SPACE. The event was sponsored by Seek Your Truth Dreams and Vision Journals.
One of my best friends, Seindole, joined me in Brooklyn for the event as well as my fellow wrestling podcaster Gizzy of Dead Ass Girls podcast. We drank champagne, ate delicious food and watched Cheyenne Thomas, Nakeba McKoy, and Tai Marie share their stories about overcoming their inner self-sabotage, and stepping into their spotlight.
I left Coney Island feeling inspired, motivated and ready to take over the world. The recap video is coming and I can’t wait to share it with you all.
