The Guard d’ Avant Progressive Music Festival has quickly become the flagship for alternative entertainment in the city of Newark, NJ. The festival runs every Tuesday for 5 weeks, this year starting on July 4th and caters to the early adaptor, tastemaker and millennial markets, by treating guests to an array of rising performers & DJs. With the help of past partners including Reebok Classics, Shea Moisture, Converse, Pasts Beer, and the City of Newark, hundreds of visitors congregate in the city's beautiful historic and recently renovated Military Park (sister park to Bryant Park), and partake in progressive live music experiences in an unexpected locale. The genre bending line-ups are decidedly multi-formatted in efforts to introduce attendees to a wide range of talents.
Past performers include Grammy-award winner Anna Wise, Dam-Funk, Kitty Cash, Shabazz Palaces, Rome Fortune and Uniiqu3, with a combined resume including the likes of Coachella, AfroPunk and Pitchfork festivals, and Art Basel, as well as press coverage from Vogue, Billboard, VICE and many more.
Festival producers The Honors Program are working to change the global conversation and perception of Newark by curating a calendar of live alternative music events, conferences and festivals designed to entice visitors to enjoy the Newark Renaissance.
We invite you to become media partners and come out to experience this festival, this city, and share this slice of Newark with your readers. We would love for you to feature the festival on your platforms and encourage cover stories and interviews.
This year’s festival will feature Kanye West designer/DJ Heron Preston, Venus X, Ian Chang, Eni and Chris Turner among others.
In addition, the music festival launch is preceded by a weekend of festivities in celebration of the July 4th kick-off. GdA Weekend starts Friday, June 30th with a launch party, the DUKA buyer’s market and panel at the Prudential Center on Saturday featuring Ouigi Theodore, Owner of Brooklyn Circus, a Sunday brunch and Holiday cookout on Monday with Dino BBQ & Vonda’s Kitchen. Each night ends with open bar after parties.
