Interview with Rob Bulman, Drummer

By Sean McCall

Rob Bulman is an Advertising major with a minor in Journalism.  He is a senior at Rowan University this year, and is currently working as Theater Technician for Theater Arts Management.  He is 22-years-old and thinking about coming back to Rowan to pursue their Music Industry program as well.

So talk a little about your past experiences and how involved you’ve been in the local scene.

I started going to shows when I was in 7th grade with friends and seeing people play. We would go and hang out.  I'd been playing drums for awhile, so I knew how to play but never really thought about being in a band and stuff.

Then in 8th grade we started jamming with my neighbors in my own shitty 3-piece. My buddy Tim, Casey Lallier, and I decided to take it a bit more seriously, and we started a band called For the Life of Me.  We had 3 guitarists, a bassist, 2 singers, and me, and we pretty much wanted to be Chiodos.  Breaking Tradition was on our first show, actually, at Hanger 84.  The first show was with Endless Sacrifice for their EP release, and we actually brought out about 80 people.  Then we started playing and people were actually really into it.  We even got an encore but ran out material.  It was an awesome experience to start off on.  More recently, I was in a band called Spiritbreaker but left because of creative differences.  I'm still friends with all them, I love all those dudes, and those were the most fun shows I've played, but it wasn't really my fit.  Then I started filling in for Twin Coves and that became a more serious thing.

After that, they pretty much asked me to be in it permanently.  Things kind of fell apart a little and I told them if you need me I'll be around to play a show or record, but I really don't want to be permanently involved because I'm graduating college and I'd be very limited.  I didn't want to hold Twin Coves back.  I felt like I didn't want to hold them back specifically while they were making moves.  I didn't want to leave those guys hanging.  I wanted to focus on myself personally and getting my life together.

So what are you up to right now?

Right now I'm just floating.  I'm playing with GIN WAR.  I plan to do music and take off a year to focus more around that, to see if I could tour and stuff like that.  Really I'm not out of any bands or anything, like if those bands ask me to play, I'd 100% be down.  In the future I really want to start doing drum covers, recording a variety of bands, and starting my own video blog.
